Jeff Lynne's ELO - New Music
Chris Evans played the new single by Jeff Lynne's ELO this morning (twice) called When I Was A Boy
Sounded great, new album out in November and I can't wait. I just hope he tours next year as that's one act I'd love to see live. |

Interesting. Do you know who the other group members are, or is Jeff doing most of it himself again? Love that Zoom Tour Live DVD.

Just heard 'When I was a Boy' and I can hear so many Beales songs in there I can't decide which one it's based on. A decent enough song but very derivative and not quite hitting the heights.
Is ELO just Jeff now? |

I don't know. The only original ELO members who performed at the Zoom concerts were Jeff and Richard Tandy (keyboards). I wonder if the likes of Ringo Starr and Tom Petty are in any way featured on this new album. I agree that the song is a bit underwhelming, but it's a pleasant enough listen, and maybe some of the other songs on the album will be a bit more upbeat. His voice still sounds good to me, anyway, unlike a lot of other veteran singers. |

Just heard the new song on the radio, I genuinely thought it was a new Paul McCartney effort. (Not a compliment).

It's on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfH8EJA-hg0 Not sure what to think........it's OK but it wouldn't get anywhere near an ELO Greatest Hits double album |

It could easily have been one of the weaker tracks from Zoom. It's all rather samey.
Also, the title brings to mind 'Grandad' by the late Clive Dunn.

Nice enough tune, seemingly cobbled together from Beatles songs..
Typical ELO then ![]() He uses so many different snatches, just as you recognize one, he's onto the next (can hear descending line from Something, but the second you place it as Something, he's doing "something" else) I quite like it, and the fact he still sounds and looks the same after all these years |

I wonder if Mik Kaminski or the late great Kelly Gourckott have contributed to the album in an uncredited role?

Yes, sounds like a typical Jeff Lynne produced ELO album track!

Jeff Lynne has never made any bones about wearing his influences from The Beatles on his sleeve.
This new song is virtually a direct lift from solo Lennon's Mind Games. |
