Sometimes I think we are just a little bit over techie here.
I observed the following conversation today -

Woman "I've got a new phone"
Man "Is it a smartphone?"
Woman "No, it's an iPhone"
At which point she produced a Samsung phone out of her bag !

iPhone, and especially iPad, are becoming 'Hoover' like terms used to describe any smartphone/tablet regardless of the make.

For stupid people maybe.

Most of the population are "stupid" when it comes to anything vaguely technical. Unfortunately the stupidity turns to ignorance. No one wants to learn how to do things properly or correctly even if a small amount of knowledge can save a good chunk of money

Hence everything gets dumbed down. It's not VoLTE, it's "4G super voice" as 3 call it. It's not ADSL, it's "broadband". "Fibre optic broadband" means DOCSIS, VDSL or fibre to the premises. etc.

Not sure I've ever heard someone refer to their Android/Windows phone as a iPhone. And maybe once I heard someone say "I've got an iPad thingy" when mentioning their tablet.

Not stupid though, is it?

The UK, a 51st state will have Apple Pay now meaning contactless.
The sign at the Co-op does not say 'Contactless payments accepted', it says 'Apple Pay accepted here'.

The contact-less payment signs have been at the tills for years and I have not seen them taken away (all I have seen is the extra Apple Pay signs now as well as the old ones).

It was large and blazoned on the front door.

Yes, there are some Contactless signs about, but mostly I have asked if they accept Contactless when I see a Contactless card machine

The Co-Op does accept contactless payments though (i.e. with a contactless card). They appear to advertise it, too - http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/as...ess-banner.jpg

No doubt, once Google gets Android Pay over here, we'll see that logo appear on the tills too.

I call my vacuum cleaner a hoover and will continue to do so.

I am fully aware it not a Hoover but hey I must be stupid to continue doing it or why is it ok in some instances and not others.

You're far from the only one. Just look at how many people on Twitter mention Dyson Hoovers, for example.. https://twitter.com/search?q=dyson%20hoover&src=typd

Given their history I'm not sure which of those two companies would be most offended by the phrase "dyson hoover".

None? It promotes both companies, more so Hoover them being a bit irrelevant?

I think your right ... http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/ip...-a2955371.html and this refers to all smartphones users.

I've yet to see alkali-aluminosilicate glass or even aluminosilicate glass roll of anyones tongue instead of gorilla glass.
Saying that, toughened glass is hardly used either.

Is the word 'Oleophobic' the height of sophistication?

Personally, I think when people refer to tablets they mean android tablets, so the person was possibly asking " should I get an android tabled or an ipad".
Maybe.

I'm not sure anyone should get too high and mighty about such things, to be honest.

Though I can't think I've come across anyone who actually owns a smartphone getting muddled over whether it's an i or not-i phone.

I think it comes down to the lives people have lead, I have a friend who could tell me every Prime Minister since 1920 and has an amazing knowledge of records over 4-5 decades, and knows about all sorts of things, yet he cannot really do anything with phones or computers.

He has a tablet (my old one), his 1st smartphone was bought this year and he has a PC. He would have stayed on XP if it wasn't for me, he has no idea about using USB devices and gets really confused with sound settings in Windows 7 and the same when he plugs in his PC into his TV, getting the sound to work.

He also needs a lot of help with a smartphone, "why is this happening", never accepts any app updates because he's worried the apps will break things.

The thing is, there's millions like him. A lot of younger or tech people generally hang around with people with the same interests, that why I have to keep reminding people on the mobile forum who think VoLTE is going to make or break a company if it doesn't launch in 12 months, or so and so's 60 meg speed test really matters, because actually.... you're the minority if it does, and I am too.

Spot on.
Millions and millions are happy if the damn thing makes a call.
Many still think "the Internet" only works when indoors.
I have customers with smart phones who have never opened the browser.
Most people with Android don't know how to put icons on the home screen (or how to remove them). Instead of putting contacts on the home screen they'll hunt around randomly stabbing at stuff until they find it... every time!
I always go into all the menus on something new to see how it works and what it can do.
Most people don't in case they "break it".
I always tap something if I don't know what it does......... to see what it does.
Most people don't in case they "break it".
Apart from a small minority (including us lot on here), Humans and tech don't mix.

This happened to my friend recently Devon.

Phone cable breaks, so the phone runs flat after a day or so, hasn't had time to buy a replacement yet so sits in the car outside the house charging it with the car charger for an hour or two. I call later in the evening and when he tells me this I point out that his mobile broadband mifi and probably his old phone has exactly the same cable connector and he could have used them!

Friend "oh I didn't think of that", "is that the same cable?", "wouldn't it damage it?" (they are all micro USB).

I am always baffled by the number of people who go around asking for " A samsung cable " who seem confused when you say, for example, I have a motorola (or sony, or just a generic microusb cable) but the cable is the same.
