Do we have any precedent for a (supposedly) platonic relationship being so popular with viewers?
I'm racking my brains here! I know people liked Brian/Narinder and Brian/Bubbles; but they didn't really like Narinder. They kind of liked Jason/Victor? I don't know - someone who's less tired and stressed out help me here!”
Bromances like the ones they had never strikes a chord. There were some horrific bromances in the past, painfully annoying or dull.
I enjoyed Austin and James', I don't know why.
For others though, I truly think the popularity was due to the sexual orientation difference. Rylan brought it up on BB. I mean it shouldn't be something we are surprised at, but people ARE surprised because even in 2015 people still feel that way. But yes, anyway, Rylan said that it was great to see that a straight man can sleep in a bed with a gay man, form a friendship and not feel like they should feel worried.
And he has a good point. Not a lot of straight guys James' age would do that. So I think that's where the popularity comes from. If they were both gay or both straight, imo it wouldn't have been as popular.
And the fact James never felt uncomfortable is one of the reasons IMO that he won. A lot of people in his position would have done the opposite. Go on the other side of room, feel like he should act "manly", but James did the opposite.
