I remember reading about this and signing up at the time to be told when it would be available in the UK. This morning I got the an email and have sent off for a free SIM (well, 'free' - £5 for activation). But apparently you get free internet access IF you complete 'offers from patners'. Well, I don't really want to be doing that, but I'm curious about the business model and. Has anyone here heard about FreedomPop, both good and bad?

I was with another company called samba who gave you free Internet if you watched adverts.

It was small amounts of data you accumulated and Samba went bust anyway. Waste of time.

Samba was different model to Freedom pop which has some signficant backers and was established in the USA around 2011.

Many people had more than their monies worth out of Ovivo, word was that Cognatel screwed them with regards their software and caused them to be terminated by the network.

Dispute over network software led to abrupt closure of network yesterday evening (March 20)

Ovivo Mobile was terminated by MVNA Cognatel following an alleged dispute over network software that would have allowed the MVNO to uniquely identify each user, Mobile News understands.

It is believed that Cognatel was contractually obliged to deliver the software but had failed to do so. Uniquely identifying each user was essential to the operator’s service which provided free airtime, texts and data in exhange for agreeing to being targeted by marketing materials.

Furthermore, it also understood that Ovivo Mobile had been withholding cash from the Vodafone MVNA as part of the dispute and it was this that led to the plug being pulled at short notice yesterday.

Must admit I was one of those and I saved around £200 over the year or so I and the OH had the SIM’s.

Still using the number now.

It should be noted that the "free" was going to be funded by tracking to serve you with ads that were personalised to you, which meant that any sites you visited were identified and tracked to your mobile number. I believe they also had in their terms that they could sell your number to companies to target you with products you might want.

I'm more than happy to pay £15 a month for my mobile provider, with better data, loads of it, stability and not fear of them closing next month and without the hassle of ads every few pages that are based on something I might have looked up last week. You had to click through full browser page ads one in every so many pages.

On a slightly different note, years ago in the dark days of dial-up, I was on a deal which was too good to be true. I can't quite remember all the details but it was unlimited dial-up for just £5 a month. Can't for the life of me now remember who it was with - it might have been Lineone - but obviously they hadn't done their sums, lost money and the deal came to an end after about 15 months. But it was great while it lasted. Mind, it WAS dial-up - remember that, the buzzing as you got connected, the phone always being engaged while you were online - my wife hated me for it - the interminable waiting for crap to download and - when you weren't on the deal I was on for a while - the phone charges? Christ wireless broadband - I'm now on unlimited fibre optic - was a lifesaver. Is ANYONE still on dial-up? I really can't think so. it would be like still watching black and white telly.

So, is the Wifi calling auto switching to VOIP over data?
And how much does the app/locked on data kill the battery?
