When my eldest son was little we had 3 hamsters, the only time one Of them ever bit was the day it died we were shocked because it never happened before but obviously the poor thing was ill, none of the others ever bit.

We had a hamster that liked to watch the televison with us. If it was not out crawling around us it used to sit up and watch the television from its cage

I love hamsters. Up until a few years ago I kept 3 or 4 at a time. They are easy and cheap to look after. They take up little space. Cute and each have their own charming quirks. They are easy to train and after a week of initially buying a hamster they don't bite because they've got used to you. They'll only bite if you wake them up by putting your hand in their cage

I love hamsters. They are truly lovely pets - my girls loved them and were never bitten or even nipped. Just handle them with love and care.

I would go into and vacuum my girls' room and even though it was daytime out would pop Jay having been disturbed from his beauty sleep .... always felt guilty doing this but he always seemed happy to see me. He and his mate lived a long almost five years with us.

I loved owning rats. I had 14 of them after a mistake sexing two of them. I think what makes rats unique is the fact that they have their own personalities, are extremely clever and curious, and they don't seem to know any fear at all.

Something that amazed me was how they interacted with my other pets. I kept them in large chinchilla cages, so they could easily get out and escape, but this was rare and the only time it happened was when the girls wanted snuggles from my Norwegian forest cat. As it was going blind, it's prey drive wasn't in existence so it was quite happy to fall asleep near the cage and one day they discovered he was warm and comfy and I came home to find them all asleep on him. I actually felt sorry for him sometimes because he'd fall asleep on top of the cage and they'd pull his tail through the top and be swinging on it, although he seemed to treat it in good humour.

They'd also share their food with the other pets. I used to feed them little bits of whatever I ate, apart from certain things which weren't good for them, as well as feed them cat biscuits as part of their diet. If the cats or the dog came sniffing around the cage, they'd actually throw bits of food out the cage for them. I wonder whether it was because they'd seen me doing it or because they'd come to an agreement where they wouldn't be hassled in return for food.

My wife had a rat in her teens and she actually managed to toilet train it. As it was a massive rat she used to let it out the cage when she came home from school and it would follow her around the house. When she needed a toilet (the rat not my wife), she'd either go back to her cage or a little "rat-potty" and then come back. They are amazing animals and I hate the reputation they have for being dirty.
The BIB made me laugh out loud! What a lovely post! My favourite small pets were gerbils for the reasons another poster has described, but hamsters do look cute which I guess is their main attraction, as well as being easy to look after

I clicked on this thread because the title amused me - I can't deny I've had the same thought from time to time. Even more so about reptiles - what's the point of a pet snake? Or lizard? Some people love them. People who don't need to be loved back? I don't know. Someone will enlighten me no doubt.

Anyway I've read the thread now, and some posts have made me very remorseful to have doubted the point of hamsters. The one who liked watching tv especially. I suppose you've got to do something when you've stopped running round a wheel for ten hours. A nice bit of Law and Order or something. I don't know.

Edited to add: one of my cats genuinely likes watching cute cat clips on youtube. No kidding.
