Let's go all the way back to Helen of Troy. Her face apparently launched a thousand ships. To be honest, I really don't care. Janice can claim what she likes. As far as I know the term supermodel wasn't even coined until the 1980s anyway.

Twiggy was huge even in the US but I consider Cheryl Tiegs to be the first. ( pretty sure I misspelled her last name).

There are plenty of newspaper and magazine articles in the archives showing that this term was used in the 60s. So it's not something that needs debating in pubs

It actually seems to have started in the 30s, Lisa Fonssagrives if you want to believe wikipedia. Janice is the first self-proclaimed supermodel but she was stunning in her day

Alright, calm down. There's a perfectly good reason why I can't remember it, I wasn't even a twinkle in either of my parents' eyes at that juncture!

I've already mentioned this in a previous post, but the first real supermodel was from the 1930's, so much, much earlier than the 1960's. But yes, you have to take things that fall from from Janice's mouth with a bucket of salt.

On ANTM, she was referred as "one of the world's first supermodels" but in recent years, she is now "the world's first supermodel". She isn't. I think someone told her she is and she uses it to her advantage. I love Janice but i cringe as she uses it as a suit of armour.

I had thought adwalton's comment was a play on the old adage that if you remember the 60's you weren't there. The inference being that anyone who was there was so high on LSD and the like, that the 60's passed in a sort of halcyon haze.

I think the idea of a supermodel came about when the names of these women became celebrated in their own right. Seemingly, historically, models were usually nameless clothes horses without a public persona. I believe the supermodel tag denotes a point where the model became famous as an individual and their name went into the public domain. And when their celebrity started to match that of the Hollywood actresses.

I see so it's a celebrity model. I doubt Janice was the first one but then reality doesn't seem to be very important to her.
