"A report from Bloomberg this morning suggests that US antitrust regulators are looking into whether Google has engaged in anticompetitive practices with its Android operating system. It seems a preposterous question to ask, but might Android constitute an actual monopoly?"

"Without competitive app stores of their own, Sony, LG, Motorola, and all other Android phone makers in Europe and the US have no reasonable alternative but to accede to Google’s dictates, whatever they may be. They technically still have a choice — these companies are coming to Google rather than the other way around — but it’s only a choice between a potential Google-driven success and a certain, ignominious failure with any other OS."

"There’s also a touch of irony in Google’s openness to doing business with other companies now exposing it to suspicions of anticompetitive behavior — Apple and Facebook are also enjoying dominant positions, but the fact they’re more stringently walled off and guarded actually works in their favor."

"arguable that other tech giants, such as Apple and Amazon, are better subjects for antitrust investigations, but ....."

I can see why Google is in the firing line for this, none of he device makers have any control over the Android ecosystem, they either give into Googles demands or risk their handsets being denied access to the play store.

I still think Samsung will eventually fork Android and maybe work in partnership with Amazon or other such outfits. Cyanogenmod is gaining in popularity, maybe they will look that way.

Samsung have given up they were all on about developing a new OS called Tizen if I remember correctly that seems to have disappeared into the wind.

But I do kind of agree with the article Android is the cause of a lot of problems at moment with how it has been developed. How the ecosystem is for all that people say that iOS is closed android isn't much more open either.

I can see the logic behind it all, but it gets complicated in the states by the sales value share.
Plus the 'no entry' sign on the other big platform adds to weirdness.

Talking of weirdness, Tizen is still meant to have Samsung and Intel as the main stakeholders, but with Tizen being a HLML 5 app type system, Intel have a catch 22, their big customer Apple freezing near any HTML advancement of their own.

I guess Tizen as an IOT may be as far as it goes, but who knows.

What the hell? you are either just trolling or lieing? On any other forum you would of been baned. Apple favour HTML 5. Does anyone know why such a liar is allowed to spread his poison so freely on this site?

There's nothing stopping anyone from making an app store of their own, or an OS of their own. It's just easier not to. Why create all that work for yourself when you can use a well established platform?

It's better for consumers too, it means that you can buy any Android phone no matter the brand, and not only will your contacts sync across but your app purchases and possibly even app states.

We already know that fragmentation sucks, having multiple app stores across devices leads to a bad experience. You'll have apps in one store but not in another, they'll work in different ways and might carry different versions of the same app etc.

Android is not a monopoly.

IOS has moved 4 points in HTML 5 compatibility, as near to frozen in time as you can get.
Even I expected better.
Anyway, the long rumour has it Intel and Samsung pulled the plug on Tizen for everything but IOT.
Plus we know full well Google said Apple was vetoing any progress to webkit, so Google had to Fork.

Now, I was quite cynical about Googles real motives but they are certainly being proved right.
The beauty about HTML 5 is that top marks ensure web things work better cross platform, Edge now being one of the best for ' it just works'.

I put my real thoughts on the matter, it is not me who brought up that Tizen mystery.

I am quite correct on HTML, as I have always said there, you can argue other, if you want, One thing for sure, the web landscape is certainly changing.

How can it be a monopoly? It's got 1000 different interpretations and none of them work properly. iOS is a monopoly (maybe even an oligopoly?) and a damned good one at that. Which is why people buy into it.

iOS is a monopoly if you buy a Apple product, If you buy one of the 15000 competitor devices created by one of the 3000 competitor manufactures in the same market as the 4 apple devices than you avoid the monopoly lol.

Android is the market leader, Android devices out sell iOS devices massively.

It's when you start to try and bring Apple into every conversation that others get bored (and I start to get entertained).

What is the Tizen mystery?

Kind of my point. 15000 products and only 1 of them work on 3 4G800 at the moment (unless more have been added since). It's not a monopoly, it's a huge mess.

Indeed. That;s what's put me off Samsung phones/tablets for a long time, they're so far removed from standard Android with all 'TouchWiz' customisation, things like 'S Calender' 'S Memo' and a load of other Samsung apps instead of the Google equivalents, and Samsung Apps Hub in addition to Google Play.

Not really seeing how it's a monopoly when Samsung have changed Android almost beyond recognition on their phones and replaced Google apps with their own.

The next version of Chome is rumoured to have unskippable Youtube ads, ignoring plugins people have installed.

If that isn't antitrust and monopoly I don't know what is. It's google controlling the whole end to end experience to ensure their revenue and block other paid adblocks / work in their interests only.

Have you actually read the thread?

The mystery is why Intel and Samsung seem to be pulling it. As long said/predicted by some Russian blogger, but that is immaterial. It is open for debate as to why. I was all for it, the HTML standard aspect being a very big positive.

Just like the news story now happening about Google about to be pulled up in the USA for monopoly practices. Another small mystery for now.
