At the moment, my home hub 5 is in the hall as that's where the phone socket is for infinity.

Ideally, I want the hub to be in the lounge so that the signal is more central. The wifi is poor when you go into the conservatory so ideally I want the hub in the lounge.

The only way I can think, is to cable round the walls and then drill through the wall, which isn't something I want to do.

Randomly, there's a phone extension coming through the wall in the lounge - no idea where that's connected to though, but this wouldn't work for infinity anyway would it?

I also tried a couple of wifi extenders, but they didn't really work that great. I know you can get homeplugs, but they cost a fortune and I don't think they work any better.

Not by default! The master socket (in your hall) filters extension sockets such that Infinity will not work. There IS one unfiltered pair of connectors inside the master socket but this would take some knowledge of which wiring pair leads to that extension and how to rewire it.

Homeplugs could help route the OUTPUT of the HomeHub. To move the HH5 itself you do need to extend the unfiltered phone line.

If the hall socket looks like this

where the HomeHub plugs into the top socket and the phone into the bottom then chances are any extension sockets will not be wired to allow you to move the hub to one of them.

As mentioned by BKM if you know what you are doing it is possible to rewire the master socket in the hall to allow the lounge extension to work.

However in recent times BT have not been installing these master sockets but instead sending a plug in filter much like ADSL uses. If you have a plug in filter then there is a chance the lounge extension could work. Assuming of course it is wired to the master and using a decent standard of cable in good working order.
