It happens more than people think a sudden power surge, a problem fuse, a kink or loose wire or a ghost.
Once the flames come that normally is a one off it's if it happens and catches light to something else when it does which poses problems. If nothing is plugged into the extension it should be OK and it is now probably beyond sparking into life again.
Is it one of those extension things with a light on.
