I have spent hours messing about with a new to me laptop, unused for 2 years, updates are taking hours.

It doesn't sound like fun.

Are you using it at this moment.

Not using it yet, sorting out Defender first, I have uninstalled Avast as it was running very slowly and 2 lots of anti-virus is a likely cause. Updates seem to stall at about a third way along the updates progress bar, I am going to try a restart as the next step is more complicated according to the support site.

I am tempted to do a factory reset but I do not have any blank CDs or DVDs to make a boot disk.

What operating system are you updating.

It is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition.

There shouldn't be a problem it update quite easily.

However nothing is ever easy.

Windows updates were not noticed by me but I want to ensure Defender is working before I install Firefox and other software. It has restarted and the updates are sticking at the same point again.

Windows defender is that a part of the security essentials thing.

It is, I noticed it in the Control panel menu, I might go to the M'soft website tomorrow and see what Essentials offers, I looked earlier before I saw Defender was on the system.

I tried it once and didn't much care for it I'm not sure it did anything I also at times had trouble installing it so didn't bother. My laptop didn't suffer by not having it.

Is your laptop running on Win 8? As I understand it recent Windows come with Defender but older ones need Security Essentials. I found it good on my laptop, no virus or trojan problems in years but I left that 7 year old laptop in Ireland, a brother may use it to play Freecell and Minesweeper, he intends joing the next Intro to Internet course.

A few downloads before Chandler and his ship show up

It is running on 10 now but that's just a recent development because I left it until the last moment to update.

It ran on Win 7 for the last three or so years happily without MSE.

Please leave the links for a while, I am having a problem with UTorrent or KAT I cannot start downloads with the magnet button.

A window opened saying my Adobe Flash is out of date, click to download now. I closed it but in my list of apps, Adobe Flash is not mentioned.

If the problem persists don't bother too much about it we can download them from elsewhere before we watch them as we do with nearly every other show.

Thanks, it looks as if I should uninstall and reinstall UTorrent, I cannot get it to run.

Untick the so called optional offers and after you click install close Firefox until it installs.

However if Youtube plays OK then it should be up to date.

Until you do and there is no rush we will take one show at a time firstly the best actor in the world Eric Dane.

That is why I did not click, no problem with YouTube and the website was one I have never heard of.
