How does non-Asian music perform in Asia?
In Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore they go mental for the likes of Bieber, if that's any indication.

Kpop is great. I love it. I started listening to it in November last year and it has become my main music genre to listen to. Great groups, awesome catchy songs and dances. A lot of people are listening it now more and more in the west. Especially younger people. There's definitely an appetite for it, but just requires people to have an open mind.

Kpop is huge in places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Japan etc. One of the groups called EXO have actually sold almost 1 million albums world wide this year.

I see my post about Young The Giant was completely ignored, they had a #7 album in US in 2014 and 2 gold singles but their sound was out of fashion here so radio didnt play them nothing to do with race, I hope.

And The Yellow Magic Orchestra/Sadistic Mika Band (1970s - 1990s)

You could add Your Woman by White Town to the list. No. 1 in the UK and Spain, no. 2 in Australia, no. 4 in Canada etc.

I see the thread's moved on!! Yes these are all good examples. Don't forget Apache Indian (Steven Kapur) from the 90s. His music like Chok There had distinctly Indian sounding sections mixed in with western influenced themes. Worked very well. There was a lot of talk that he was going to be the big breakthrough artist and that lots of other young British Asians would follow him through. Didn't happen for whatever reason but it did show the musi c industry that South Asians can make an impact and shouldn't be ruled out on sight (or sound).

I wouldn't under estimate the impact of Psy by the way. He has boosted East Asian pop music on a global scale. Yes his hit was a comedy song but what was more important was his acceptance by western fans and media as a force in pop. And unlike say Freddie Mercury, he didn't have to pretend to be a western artist. Having said all that I still consider J-pop and K-pop to be western music in disguise, which means with careful reworking, Asian groups could have very big hits in the west.

Could I ask also that why are the only successful Asian (half Asian) artists in the industry people who dont look Asian? Bit odd..

Neyo
Freddie Mercury
Bruno Mars
Nicki Minaj
Bat for Lashes aka Natalie Khan looks Asian and she's had 2 top 10 albums.

Now known as SEXWITCH! According to Wikipedia her father was a highly ranked Pakistani squash player who went on to coach the world no. 1 squash player (who was his cousin and likewise from Pakistan).

But surely "making it in pop music" is synonymous with "being in the Top 40 all the time"? It's already been established that loads of musicians of Asian origin are highly successful, just (mostly) not as pop stars.

Agreed. You need the pop equivalent of Signature. Few expected a British Asian dancing duo to come second on BGT and even fewer expected them to still be around and performing during the Olympics. You need that in pop.

Is it to do with the stereotyping, which in turn makes those in the music industry reluctant to invest in Asian artists. The only Asian songs that manage to reach the charts of those of a comedic value... . There is subtle racism when it comes to how Asians are depicted in the media.... Nerds, or jokes (Gangnam Style)

Asian music on the other hand not reaching the mainstream is more to do with America and Britain having the monopoly over the music industry. Just like how America manage to spread their food franchises worldwide (Mcdonalds)
What about Nelly Furtado or Shilpa Shetty?

Not to that extent if we're talking Japan.

There is always a non-Japanese band or singer with a large following in Japan, but overall, it's Japanese (mostly), South Korean and mainland Chinese artists that dominate most Japanese music charts throughout each year.

The one with the biggest following at the moment is Sekai no Owari (世界末日; End of the World). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sekai_no_Owari They have three singles in the Top 40 chart this week. Anti-Hero, SOS and RPG. The one with the fastest rising following is probably [Champagne], but due to copyright infringement, they're now known as [Alexandros]. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandros_(band)

Currently, non-Japanese artists in most charts are Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. That's it. Most non-Japanese artists that broke through tend to be a fad or an one-off. Just like the way PSY has been in the west. Major bands like The Beatles, Pearl Jam and such did or still do have a following, but usually as part of the underground scene. Of course, the language barrier is usually the reason.

Of course no Japanese artist has any serious following or representation in the UK charts or Indie music scene at present.
