This. One of the most iconic pop stars of all time was Asian.

It's a pity few have followed him.

Zayn from 1D sticks out like a sore thumb because the Asian presence is so rare.

as for South East Asia- their pop scene is a treasure trove-I love it!

BUT- the language thing is a barrier. Songs in foreign languages rarely make the Western charts. Gangnam style was an anomaly

Ah" at last I have found a psychic twin!
Western pop utterly safe, bald & unadventurous these days. I find Asian pop far more innovative with a less pretentious & lighter mood to it.
It's fun & light hearted with some catchy tunes & for me that's more important that the usual Western pop thing of looking cool & blinging it up.

Yes, i always anticipate something i don't expect in the song when i hear it for the first time. Just like BP's "Whistle"...Rose and Jisoo's parts with guitar playing ...didn't see that coming...thought it had a country western vibe...LOL....as far as "Playing With Fire"...that was so catchy and the long 'rap' from Lisa was unexpected really.

The stage presence, performance, and just the whole atmosphere is why i love kpop so much. The catchy songs just seals it. BTS rules kpop right now. The performance of Fire was lit!!

Here's a Japanese, rather beautiful piece from the 1990s...

Pizzicato Five - 'Baby Love Child' https://youtu.be/lB-2IzAZk90 - by far their best song and it was used in Futurama.

Haven't seen this mentioned before... 80s Japanese funk remixed for 2016 seems to be a thing.

Speaking of Korean pop music, some of Brother Su's songs are quite lovely and I don't see why they couldn't be hits over here:

That's not too bad. But my preferred Japanese music is electronic like Yellow Magic Orchestra (Technopolis) https://youtu.be/zFADf3CW8zI
Or Tomita (Snowflakes are Dancing). https://youtu.be/wD-b6mU3SYQ
And unlike most of JPop and KPop these artists were successful in the US/UK.

I find most KPop too sweet but there is some great alternative Asian music about
Goose House - Sing https://youtu.be/Fabi5cq2Vwk
Popoyans - https://youtu.be/5G-OCSovUcQ
