Just incase anyone is considering purchasing a Manhattan Plaza Freesat + HD box, it is worth knowing that the Bush HD Freesat+ box from Argos has exactly the same remote, the same menu's, the same recordings library and so on. The Manhattan Plaza is £129.99 from Curry's and the Bush is £149.99 from Argos. One advantage these boxes have over the more expensive Humax (although this is in no way decrying the Humax box) is that they have an external audio capability: i.e you can connect a soundbar to it.

I think if you want a good, reliable. easy to use machine, either of these are perfectly adequate. I know you hear some bad stories about them, but they aren't bad at all - after all they are guaranteed for 12 months which suggests they are not likely to cause you too many problems.

I had a Manhattan Plaza PVR box from John Lewis earlier this year. I kept for a couple of days, it froze many times and missed recordings. Luckily due to JL being good with returns it went back and now they no longer sell it.
I know I'm just one person but mine was bad.

The trouble is, whatever the product, there is always going to be, sadly, a dud amongst the good. It is really annoying when you buy something expecting it to be good and it does the opposite of what it's meant to.

I have had mine (Manhattan) since April and so far, so good. I did think it had died last week because the picture went blue and then the box wouldn't pick up a signal. So, I bought a Bush from Argos because no one had a decent unit in the town I live and for a couple of days it worked well before going the same way as the Manhattan - picture turning blue and then not picking up a signal. I had a brainwave and realised it must be something other than the freesat boxes - which indeed it was. It was merely a faulty HD cable!

So, my Manhattan is back up and working and is still doing what it's meant to do. Fingers crossed it'll be fine for a while yet.

They're not the same box though are they. They're different designs. After having a couple of totally rubbish Humax boxes I bought a Manhattan HDR. I do like the ease at which you can flick to non freesat channels and record them without any problems. It's a shame the interface looks a bit 1990's compared to the Humax but as I've said before I much prefer substance over style.

Yes, externally they're different, but internally they're identical. In every respect. Even the remote control is identical.

Bush is just a badge (and Manhattan 'may' be?), so it's quite likely the boxes are identical.

Funny then how this unbranded generic box is as silent as a mouse yet the Humax are a load of noisy tat.

I have both my Humax boxes connected directly to my Sony HT-ST3 sound bar via HDMI cables and they work perfectly.
