Celine Call the man?

No, but it started off promising. It's that kind of a song, where you can imagine the video showing the singer standing on a mountain top. It's beginning to reinforce my feeling that Celine Dion's voice is simply to whiny and weedy for this song, but that doesn't mean to say that it's sung by a booming foghorn like Heather Smalls. I still feel sure it's a white singer.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions. I truly appreciate them, even though they're nearly all just about the opposite of what I would normally choose to listen to.

Finding this song has now turned into my main mission in life and as soon as I find the bloody thing I promise to let you know. I think it's the eerie, haunting juxtaposition of the G# and G which gets to me the most.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the song you're after but is it anything like this?

Evanescence - My Immortal

Melody wise, it's in A rather than B# which is why I'm sure this isn't the song you're looking for. I have a feeling I will know the song you're looking for but it's just trying to figure out the style, exactly how the melody goes.

It is of a similar style, until you get to the guitar histrionics at the end. What's so frustrating is that I feel it surely must be a mega-star of this kind of music, but I've never heard of many of the artists mentioned here. It involves a bit of a drive, but I'm on the verge of going all the way back to the shop where I heard it and asking if I can look through their DVD selection.

Could it have been a musac version of a popular song?

Absolutely not. It's a strong vocalist and quite a big production job.

I'll post this old song, even though I've been hesitating to do so because it will inevitably send people off in totally the wrong direction. It's the slightly eerie atmosphere of it that rings a bell with me, but please don't start suggesting samba sound-alikes. I'd actually forgotten about the slightly cheesy rhythm to this until I finally found it again.

When I eventually find the song I'm looking for, you will wonder how the hell I could possibly have compared it to this, but it makes sense to me anyway Remember – the song I'm looking for has no chicken-in-the-basket nightclub backing.

My favourite band - I'd know that one but in any case it's not old enough. I have a feeling it would be more in the Lovefool era.

Interesting, as I was ready to dismiss it as soon as I saw it was a band, but the vocals are of about the right type. It's almost certainly a solo female singer – almost certainly wearing a long dress.

This is probably far too obvious and well-known that you wouldn't already know it, but it's not This Woman's Work by Kate Bush, is it? I'm trying to think of stuff with haunting vocals and orchestral backing.

Kate Bush is unmistakeable. I have a feeling that the singer is most likely to be American (or Canadian), but without a strong accent. The production sounds American as much as anything. I might see if I can find time to nip into the store this afternoon and ask customer services.

Interesting - I was convinced I had got it with Celione dion its all coming back to me now, strong female singer, 90s power ballad, no beat, orchestral backing, dramatic chorus..
