I have it! I have it!

Sleeping Satellite - Tasmin Archer

I had completely forgotten about this gem from 90s and it's such a lovely song. It seems strange how you never hear it these days

Can the OP please feedback?

I've given up trying to find it from suggestions, as hardly any of them are anywhere near. Ace of Base and Madonna are light years away. I'll just have to get into the habit of listening to cheesy MOR stations when I'm in the car and hope that I eventually stumble across it.

Definitely no vocal hiccups on the track I'm looking for. Tasmin Archer's song was a big hit that I would have easily remembered. It's also sung way too fast. The song in question seemed to be sung at a snail's pace, or at least the chorus was... very grandiose but haunting because of that weird sequence of notes.

After hours of painful research into Celine, Mariah and Whitney, etc, the closest I've come to finding that song is Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton. It isn't the song I've been looking for, but has a similar feel, to the extent that the notes of the chorus could almost be the one I'm looking for played in reverse order. I really don't know where to look now; it received quite a lot of radio play at the time (almost certainly in 1998), yet I can't find it from any chart listings.”

Thinking about this 'You'll See' by Madonna sounds similar to 'Unbreak my heart'. I know you've said its not her but this was a hit that doesn't get remembered much these days and her voice is pretty good on this one.

It's a female singer with a song that probably dates back to the late 1990s and I suppose it's what you might call a powerful torch ballad (not rock in any way). It's not music I would normally listen to but the tune intrigues me and it's bugging me that I can't find what it is.

I seem to remember somebody suggesting it might be a Celine Dion song, but I've suffered listening to all the ones that tend to come up on YouTube and her voice sounds far too lightweight and whiny for it to be her. It's definitely an MOR classic though, as I often hear it when walking round a huge clothes store I sometimes visit.

If I click on the speaker symbol on the web page, it downloads a .mid file to my computer, but it just plays silence in Windows Media Player.”

Don't know if it's been suggested already but have you considered calling the store in question and asking about their playlist ?

I asked on my last visit and they said that although they used to play CDs through their store PA system, it's now contracted out to some kind of agency that does that kind of thing – which sounds utterly ridiculous to me.

Many people are suggesting R&B (or what now passes as R&B) songs, whereas the tempo makes it more like a spooky version of something like Somewhere Over The Rainbow. I can see why someone thought it could have been the Tasmin Archer song, which does have an unconventional feel to it.

Re; the first point is actually correct whilst sounding daft. The reasons behind it can be read here. https://www.gov.uk/licences-to-play-background-music

Anyways, I'm sure you're bound to hear this song again eventually.

I have now but it's still not the one. I'm fairly sure that my song doesn't have a clicky rhythm track, but it's possible that it wouldn't be apparent over a store PA system at the volume they usually play things at.

I suppose you might call the vocals slightly old fashioned, in that they are sung quite straight; quite soulful, yet without any pseudo-soul inflections or undue, histrionic warbling.

One day... one day.

A few suggestions
Big Mistake - Natalie Imbruglia
Summertime - The Sundays
Here's Where The Story Ends - Tin Tin Out
Crush - Jennifer Paige
Turn Back Time - Aqua

I really hope for all our sakes it isn't Celine!

My first thought was Unforgiven by Alanis but that's already been suggested.

I'm sorry, but may you rot in hell for suggesting that Here's Where The Story Ends was by Tin Tin Out, especially when you'd already quoted Summertime by The Sundays.

I sincerely hope that you put that in as a wind-up.

With an attitude like that I hope you never sleep again for wondering what song it is when somebody tries to help you.
Yes I know Here's Where The Story Ends was originally by The Sundays but in 98, the year you reckon your song was out, it was Tin Tin Out's version that was all over the radio.

Give up now everybody, don't waste your time helping this idiot.

LOL

I think the implied it was a joke.

Makes me laugh when I see joke comments on forums being taken in the wrong context.

Don't worry, my brother once sent me an email that was supposed to be funny and I nearly had a raging argument with him until he explained what his e-mail meant.

I was like...oh, right?
