imagine leaving your clothes on so long your skin grew over them...
I saw a baby about 2 months old admitted to hospital - a neglect case. She was still wearing the same hospital issue nappy she had been wearing when discharged after birth. It had to be removed surgically. Poor mite would have been better off with the Stone Age Mum in the post above.

That is just horrific!

The fascinating symbolic tattoos of an Ancient Egyptian woman found at Deir el-Medina are the very first of their kind.

I wonder if those who tattoo nowadays realise how distorted and unattractive they become as they age?

Five things to know about the Diamond Sutra - at over eleven hundred years it's the world's oldest printed book.

This passage about the fleeting nature of our lives is particularly beautiful.

'So you should view this fleeting world—
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,
A flash of lightening in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.'

It is beautiful. It reminds me of this one:

'The present life of man upon earth, O King, seems to me in comparison with that time which is unknown to us like the swift flight of a sparrow through the mead-hall where you sit at supper in winter, with your Ealdormen and thanes, while the fire blazes in the midst and the hall is warmed, but the wintry storms of rain or snow are raging abroad. The sparrow, flying in at one door and immediately out at another, whilst he is within, is safe from the wintry tempest, but after a short space of fair weather, he immediately vanishes out of your sight, passing from winter to winter again. So this life of man appears for a little while, but of what is to follow or what went before we know nothing at all.”*
The Venerable Bede

Yes, it reminded me of Bede as well - some really wonderful and thought provoking writing.

A huge treasure trove of late Roman artifacts has been recovered from the waters of the ancient Mediterranean harbor of Caesarea.

Did anyone see the programme a few months (or maybe many months ) ago where they found an entire city underwater. With the aid of cgi they showed yu what it woud have looked like when it was inhabited. Absolutely fascinating, it wasn't Pavlopetri.

Any update on the hidden rooms in Tutankhamun's tomb?

I watch so many Planets that I have probably seen it but forgotten.

As for the hiddens chambers in Tutankhamun's tomb - sadly it appears that there are none after all.

But the whole situation has descended into political squabbling and controversy.

I have seen the one on Pavlopetri - it was superb.

It is a shame how Egyptology is always mired in conflict and contoversy but at least that bloody ego-maniac Zahi Hawass is not in charge anymore.

So fresh. The villa had been buried in volcanic ash when Vesuvius erupted so perhaps that accounts for it.

Senor Gomez is smiling wide enough to break his face! What a wonderful thing it must be to make a discovery like that after so many years of study.
