Hello,

After having been a Tiscali/TalkTalk TV/phone/broadband customer for many years I'm looking at upgrading from standard broadband to fibre, coupled with a potential move to BT.

TalkTalk's website informs me that we can't currently get fibre with them, despite the fact that there are BT fibre-enabled cabinets in our road and to be honest, the prospect of having to sign up with TT for at least another 18 months does not exactly appeal, hence my thoughts about a move to the opposition.

Now, TT have traditionally had the upper hand with relation to the selection of channels available but I understand that BT are now catching up in terms of what they can offer. This is a big deal for us as we are unable to receive either Sky or Virgin where we live so I'm keen to maintain a decent range.

The documentary channels we currently watch on TT seem to be available on BT now - things like Discovery, NatGeo, History etc but it's not entirely clear whether the childrens' channels are 'as live broadcast' or only on-demand - would somebody be able to clarify this for me please?

Also - on a general point, how are BT in terms of reliability and customer service these days? TalkTalk have certainly improved in this respect but still aren't particularly wonderful - but then again, who is..?

Any help/thoughts gratefully received - many thanks in advance,

Dave.

The kids channels are live and are on the epg. Bt has the discovery group of channels and have the HD versions.

Recently switched from sky. Their customer service isn't as good was hard work explaining my billing issues but they sorted it. Their youview boxes are so much better than the talk talk ones.

Have you checked with BT that you can fibre at your address?, having fibre enabled cabinets nearby doesn't guarantee you can get it.

Why are you unable to receive sky? That is pretty rare and last time I investigated such a claim it was a lazy sky installer who was unprepared to spend time locating the dish in a suitable point, in this case on the roof of a 3 story building so that it had line of site over an adjacent even taller building.

One reason why you can't get TT fibre despite there being a cabinet is that TalkTalk (and Sky) work in a different way to BT (and every other provider).

The fibre cabinets connect to a particular piece of BT-owned equipment in a telephone exchange (if you're in a village, it'll probably be in the nearby town's exchange). TalkTalk and Sky have to arrange for a connection between their network and this piece of equipment. If they haven't done this yet, then you won't be able to get their fibre services.

If the cabinet was installed not that long ago, it may be that it is not yet actually active and ready to take on customers.

None of the large ISPs have particularly great customer service, but TT is already pretty poor so BT can only be an improvement. The service is likely to be reliable enough.

Thanks for the helpful replies - upon checking, it appears that we are due to get fibre rolled out in the next month or so, so swapping to BT or staying with TT and taking fibre isn't yet an option so I guess we'll have to hold fire for now.

We can't have Sky due to a line of massive, heavily-foliaged evergreen trees at the rear of our garden which are not part of our property. We have had 2 engineers' visits - one of which was by an independent installer - and they both said there'd be no chance of getting a signal through such a dense screen.

My choice personally would be for Virgin but they do not have cabling in our locality.
The local council saw what a mess the cable company of the time (Cabletel) made in the neighbouring borough of Guildford and stipulated such draconian conditions for installation in our area that nobody's bothered since, sadly..

I have been with BT TV with Youview over 20 months now and have been happy with the service so far. I don't have the Sky Sports or Sky Movies bolt on but have all the rest. Including the full BT Sports pack for Free.
As I have said before elsewhere I find Netflix better value than paying for the likes of a Sky Movies bolt on. I was using Netflix just before BT started offering it so I don't have Netflix though BT. Me and my sister share the Netflix monthly free.
Have also been with BT Infinity over 4 years now having moved from the basic BT Broadband and I can also say I have been mostly happy with BT Infinity and there Infinity service has improved since I first got it.
BT customer service I found to be fine the few times I have had to contact them over the years.
