Windows Phone battery saver mode
Recently, my Nokia Lumia 920 started occasionally getting really hot at the top (even if left alone) and munching through its battery, sometimes going from 100% at 6am to 20% mid afternoon, and needing a charge to get through the day.
I tried turning off background processing for most apps, and closing apps when i finished with them, but that didn't seem to fix the intermittent problem. So, I've turned battery saver mode to be always on, because it turns off all 'non-essential features and background tasks'. So far the phone hasn't got hot again. My question is whether you think there's any basic functionality that i'm not yet aware i'm missing out on. The documentation about battery saver mode is a bit vague. Things 'seem' to be working ok... I know I have to manually sync mail and calendar, and i know that i won't get Facebook Messenger alerts. I still get texts! Cortana geofencing functionality still seems to work. The only other apps i regularly use are Photos, Podcasts, Maps, Spending Tracker, Internet Explorer, OneNote, Nokia MixRadio, Natwest, and National Rail. I haven't noticed anything wrong with those (except MixRadio which won't update an offline mix when battery saver mode is on; it errors and says 'battery low'). |

Did you try powering the phone off and on again to clear any orphan processes left running by a badly coded app?

Restart the phone. My 920 used to do this occasionally, but worse than you are having. It would drain a battery in under an hour. A reboot always fixed it.

yeah, when I notice the heat I restart it and that fixes it (until next time!). I don't notice immediately because my phone is on my desk at work; so not in my pocket where i'd feel it getting hot. More often than not the impact on the battery % is too large for me to risk it conking out before I get home, so i need to top it up at work. My worry is that I won't be able to plug it in one day and the phone will let me down when I really I need it on the way home.

If you are getting an unexplained high battery usage then better to power-cycle it sooner rather than later to get it back to normal. Get yourself a powerpack which can be reassuring if you are concerned about not having access to a charging point. I have this Aukey one which has the advantage of being able to charge your 920 wirelessly as well as over USB.
You may wish to try and identify which apps are causing this. For example, I have noticed that BBC iPlayer Radio is an app that needs to be stopped and closed down carefully rather than using the fast close method. Here Maps sometimes seems to be a culprit too and again seems to help to not use the fast close method on it but back out step by step. |

Very good point! I find exactly the same. TBH After I've used any iPlayer app now I restart the phone. I don't get the heat (now have a 1020) but if you don't the battery drain is ridiculous. Only with the iPlayer apps though, don't get the issue with Maps.

Working well so far... since turning battery saver permanently on,my phone hasn't heated up and run its battery down. And I've still got 66% battery at the end of the day
