Conversation with Devon in another thread made me remember I am looking at getting another car.

So was wondering has anyone actually tried Apple CarPlay and if so is it worth the additional cost for it?

Only a few people could have it!

It's only just becoming available on a few cars ! It wasn't an option on my Golf Mk7 (ordered in March 2015 - delivered in June) - but it is on ones ordered now (at £100 extra).

I was talking with a VW dealer yesterday who says the CarPlay still doesn't work properly, but it is a work in progress.

Oops my bad I thought it had been possible to get on cars for a while now so likely if I do want I'm going have to be selective on the car I pick.

Maybe some makes - but I did think VW were one of the first!

The most obvious use would be to mirror the phones SatNav apps - but I read somewhere that the vehicle manufacturers had insisted it not do this (to maintain sales of their vastly overpriced own systems).

I would also be interested to hear if such rumours are true (and what it actually does!)

I got told that Apple Maps is one of the standard Car Play apps so that sounds odd. While not as good as Google maps is far better than a lot of sat nav in cars. My boss had an Aston Martin and the sat nav in that thing was absolutely awful. Was literally like the old Sat Nav standard alone devices we got 15-20 years ago. No Traffic cam info or road limits or anything you would expect from a sat nav system. Literally just a line on a map no custom voices was awful and they charged him over a thousand for it. Literally a cheap 5 year old TomTom from eBay would of been light and day over it.

Must've used the horrible Volvo system from the Ford parts bin!
The new Astra has CarPlay and Android Auto support; although I've not looked into the details to see if this comes standard on the higher specced vehicles.

I personally think the Android Auto system is better as it uses Google Maps for navigation. Apple Maps is still horrible.

You can get an aftermarket one (with CarPlay and Android Auto support) for cars with a double-DIN stereo, from Pioneer, that I am looking to buy for my Fiesta. A bit expensive at over £400 but it looks very good.

Haha it came out of the dash nice that was the only thing good about it. I only know as he turned up 2 hrs late to a meeting and told us all about how it had lead him in circles. We all knew he had an aston and honestly we thought he was messing around so he took us down and showed us.

If that is what Volvo used to have I feel sorry for any Volvo or Aston drivers.

Haha it appears you can get HUD in Mini's now but not Car Play lol.

My OH car apparently has it, it's just deactivated till they sort out bugs. '2016' SEAT Leon.
I've seen it on a VW demonstrator (i'm looking for a new company car) and it was rather buggy. I managed to crash the system within 5 minutes of playing, froze and rebooted with the VW logo (much like when you crash an iPhone which is rare) and was back at where it left off.. I can see why SEAT held off.

Apple Maps are supposed to be standard with CarPlay and it's actually i found it one of the better Sat nav mapping ... I have access to a lot of new vehicles in my job. It certainly better than BMW's non touch screen / voice activation system stupidy, which just doesn't work very well.

It's improved a lot from when everyone and their dog was bitching about it.

Omg I've tried the BMW thing when I had to rent a car last year it was painful as hell. I spent about 5 minutes trying to get it understand me. In end I went and got a suction cup mount for my phone and used that lol. I never understand why people think BMW are so good never found that myself.

Worst Sat Nav in a car i've ever used is in a Porsche though it kept saying postcode i was entering didn't exist lol. I asked it plot a journey to Cardiff and I ended up closer to Devon then I did Wales lol. I was driving for ages and noticed a sign for Southampton. Baring at the time I was coming from Manchester.

Though Sat Nav in a Lexus used be about as much use as a car with one wheel.

Agree about Apple Maps I think it's still slightly behind Google Maps but it's far better than anything I've used in a car apart from a standard alone TomTom.

I like the look of the Seat Leon myself if CarPlay is available with it than it has certainly made my list at moment lol. Assume you have go into garage and they will just flash new firmware? When they sort out bugs out.

I heard Apple Car Play is now wireless. Not a problem if it's not as I like to keep my phone on charge in car anyway.

As far as I'm aware its available on the Seat Leon. Have a look over on the Seat Cupra.net forum. It has to however be added at the point of order when the car is factory built.

The option is still there if not added however there is message to say not activate, please contact your dealer to activate. Dealers can not however currently activate this feature. This is not to say this won't change in the future.

Ah okay so definetely keep Seat in mind as both the Leon and Ibiza forget difference between them seem to have CarPlay compatibly thanks for the information.

Willing wait till Feb/March for a new car but would like one sooner than that not sure if it is willing wait or not at present. Probably will sound stupid to some but would like a nice looking dash and strong compatibly with my phone.

I may be wrong, but isn't the point of CarPlay that you can run any phone app on the display, so in theory there's no reason why you can't use Google Maps ?

Not according the review I posted earlier:

"Third party apps like Google Maps and Waze do not work with CarPlay, and of all the apps on my phone the only non-Apple one to appear on the car's screen was the Audible audiobook service."

I don't think so. I think apps have to be coded specifically for CarPlay (cut down UI, improved visibility, voice control etc) and that Apple approves them. I doubt mapping apps are allowed because they'll want people to use their own solution.

Pluis a grid of 24 apps is going to look very busy and confusing!

Available as a retro fit (double din) from the likes of Pioneer etc. Widely available in Halfords.

Not had time over weekend to look at cars sadly hopefully upcoming weekend I will have a chance it still sounds like even though Apple CarPlay was announced last year it's very much still in development in terms of getting it into cars.

Fair enough, I haven't really been paying attention since it was first talked about. At least that makes me feel better that my new Ford Galaxy about to arrive doesn't have Car Play !

Not so sure I agree. I use an iPhone on the dash, and it's the very predictability of IOS's home screen that makes it practical. It might be boring but it always looks the same.

Cant believe people are picking a car based on it having apples carplay system. Mental. Each to their own I guess.

I have had a BMW and currently an Audi, both had perfectly useable sat nav systems. Always got me to where I needed to go.

Darn sight safer than trying to operate the in car radio system. I mainly use my phone in the car for listening to podcasts and audio books. The giant buttons and controls of the relevant apps are so much easier and safer than fiddling with the radio.
