Cant believe people are picking a car based on it having apples carplay system. Mental. Each to their own I guess.

I have had a BMW and currently an Audi, both had perfectly useable sat nav systems. Always got me to where I needed to go.
I don't think we're quite there yet, but as time goes on I think it'll start to become something that more people consider when looking for a new car. I saw a review recently, I think for the new Mini, in which the reviewer commented that this is probably the last generation of cars where people will readily forgive them not having CarPlay and Android Auto integration. I would say that's about right. People are using their phones for just about everything, and car integration is a next logical step. Certainly better than most in-car systems with horrible UIs, slow menus, awful sat navs and maps that cost a fortune to update.

Darn sight safer than trying to operate the in car radio system. I mainly use my phone in the car for listening to podcasts and audio books. The giant buttons and controls of the relevant apps are so much easier and safer than fiddling with the radio.
Not sure about that, at all. You would still have to launch the app to start with. Either way its illegal to use your phone whilst driving. Whilst using the car radio isnt.

I would have though things like make, model, safety rating etc will come higher than the in-car systems.

I have an audi with the MMI system, to be honest it does the job quite well and its not slow at all. With in-car systems its not about flashy graphics and highly detailed maps. As when you are driving, you dont want flashy graphics distracting you, or overly complicated maps. You just want the basic info that you will take in with a quick glance.

Here are some pics of the Audi MMI system. Not horrible by any stretch of the imagination.

I do agree it way to expensive to update the maps.

^^ I don't disagree with what you're saying about other considerations taking priority. I just think it'll be one of the considerations in the way that "Does it have Bluetooth?" etc already is.

Since I doubt you can afford Jimmys lawyer, you would be well advised not to use your phone whilst driving.

Maybe, but its still the law. Maybe you want an exception made for apple users?

Since getting bluetooth as an added feature, it can cost a couple of hundred. Most people would just rather buy a bluetooth headset. If they are buying a used car, and it comes with bluetooth then fine.

I dont think bluetooth is a consideration that most people look for. It maybe a low priority consideration, but its certainly one of the major considerations. This is borne out by the number of people that still use their phone in their car. I still see them on a regular basis.

No, but the original point was whether it was safe, not whether it was lawful.

So, I assume you would advocate banning car radios and don't use one yourself ?

I dont listen to the radio. So if it was banned it wouldnt bother me. My car has a built in hard drive which I have all the stuff I listen to on.

However if I was to listen to the radio, I have the controls on the steering wheel so wouldnt need to take my eyes of the road. Thats much safer than using a phone.

Not sure why you are being anal about this. Using a phone is more dangerous than not using a phone. Only a fool would say it isnt. So it best to just drop it. Instead you seem to have given up digging with a spade, got hold of a JCB and started digging a bigger hole, even quicker.

You seem to be missing the whole point of my argument - and BTW being abusive doesn't aid yours either.
Let me recap. The reason I am attracted to Car Play (and for that matter Android Auto) is because of standardisation of UI. Whatever car I get into in the future there will be a UI I am familiar with and will therefore aid safety. I have owned some cars with absolutely appalling positioning and UI of the car radio. I also frequently rent cars, and the same goes. As an interim solution (pending Car Play etc.), my own phone positioned in line of sight on the dash, combined with a few selected apps that have nice giant buttons which I can operate without barely looking because I am very familiar with them is a lot safer than the typical integrated systems I come across. A speed readout on my phone requires less distraction than the actual car speedo which is not in line of sight (I assume you do occasionally look down at your speedo BTW ?)
