A Bad Thriller

Electric shock treatment/chemical castration and god knows what else... was prison really that bad for gay men?

First time I have found him interesting.

Aversion therapy - still happens today in the USA

Yes it was.

Lawrence was great tonight. He has a fantastic backstory which is finally being explored.

The Whites made a decent impact upon arrival but I'm glad their main stories have come a bit a later and they haven't been rammed down our throats in the vein hope we'd accept then. Even vile little weirdo Lucky seems to be in it for the long haul. I'm waiting to hear what happened to Chrisse in the past to cause her to raise a sex offending loon.

Yes it did. Or you could, like Turing, have it to avoid going to prison.

Soaps shouldn't be showing this..

Why are they messing with nature?

Yep - it's a horrible thought - and that it still goes on in the USA today is frankly disgusting...

Do you mean the aversion therapy and them trying to rid him of his sexuality? It's pretty disturbing but totally true that it happened and still does in parts of the world.

I saw a documentary where Dr Christian Jessen went for it done in America, and it was appalling. They shocked him with electrodes until he was sat in pools of his own vomit for hours. Awful

Yes, it did happen here, been gay wasn't legalised in the UK until 1967 and all sorts of treatments and therapies were used to try and "cure" then. But was taboo for years after that. In fact in the 1980s, section 28 was passed which banned schools from "Promoting" homosexuality and was only repealed in 2003.

You need to remember being Gay was considered an illness and against the law. Being gay then was like being a pedophile now. It was like the worst disgusting thing a human being could ever be.

But is thankfully gradually being banned state by state. However the vast majority still allow "conversion therapy." It's called the "ex-gay" movement and it's horrendous. Christian from embarrassing bodies had a doc on it earlier this year.

There was a storyline in the last series of Call the Midwife (set in the 60's) where a gay man had to accept a prescription for oestrogen to avoid prison and was warned by the doctor that he'd develop breasts, become infertile etc. Just awful.

I saw that documentary too. Pretty shocking that people can think they can actually change someones sexual preference. It was on Holby City a couple of months ago when that woman offered Dominic a leaflet saying how miserable he was because he was gay.

Didn't Dr Christian go to Africa too?

I also remember that documentary on BBC3 'The Worlds Worst Place to be gay' & it was in Africa somewhere & the presenter didn't reveal himself as gay until they were due to leave & he was nearly caught & put in prison.

Yes it happened and it didn't just ruin the life of the man entire families were destroyed by the abuse. Growing up with a gay dad who had been imprisoned when he was young was no fun at all the effects of it carry on through the generations as we have a quite dysfunctional family all built on that.

Mainly because of Christians and their mistranslated cherry-picked homophobia
It tends to be religious folk that endorse this and claim to pray the gay away and other vile evil BS

The scene with Bernice was heart breaking but so well done by all. It was also another scene that reaffirmed my beliefs that John is a fantastic addition to the show and that Lawrence is a great character. Loved him with Eric earlier. The man should do audiobooks.

Spot on
Great post

They like to pick and choose what is acceptable from the bible. They turn a blind eye to adultry or sex before marriage, all of which were punishable offenses once upon a time, but homosexuality still wont be allowed.

Pah f*** what those people think when they believe stories about some talking snake tempting Adam & Eve to eat an apple

They do pick & choose what they believe which is so annoying as they'll turn a blind eye indeed.

Lawrence's scenes last night were great. I like how they made that his motivation for not wanting Chrissie to be locked up.

I wish really that they spent more time exploring Lawrence's past, instead of this Who Shot Robert stuff, which is boring my knickers off.

Anyway, Hands up, who's not been accused of shooting Robert yet?

I'm sure nothing happened to Chrissie to have raised a sex offending loon, and am surprised you would even suggest such a thing. More likely something has happened to Lachlan, besides the availability of porn on the internet.

Probably only is some states... California, New York, Washington, etc... Are pretty accepting and open minded, whereas Texas, South Carolina, Mississippi I've heard are extremely homophobic. It's bad really. Didn't even become legal in those states until 2003, compared to Britain legalising it in the 60's. Sorry, I probably sound like a right know it all.
