I think Jane is the only one that is past redemption. She had the chance to try and help Lucy ; she said when she got there Lucy was gone but she didn't even try to resuscitate her. She just went into cover up mode straight away, put Lucy in the boot and then dumped her on the common. She let Jake be charged with Lucy's murder, she put Ian and Peter through hell and now all this stuff with Max not to mention all the master manipulation and jedi mind tricks. The woman is vile and needs to go to jail.
Ian - was always a vile little man who put himself first and looked down on everyone else. I don't think his actions - however deplorable they are - are actually out of character! I don't think he should get away scot free, but I don't the writers are going to get him sent down (unless Adam w had decided to take a year off too)

The actions of Abi and Lauren are deplorable but they are not ruined completely. Sharon is difficult to watch as she is happy to send max to prison and she needs a good shake and Phil needs taking down a peg or two but I don't think they have been totally ruined, just a bit spoilt round the edges

The word 'ruined' gets thrown around too much here.

I don't really get this. She knew she was dead. She didn't not call an ambulance because she'd rather she was dead than Bobby get into trouble. She just knew she was dead.

I haven't been around a lot to see it being thrown around but I think I understand what owen10 means. That is when a character has acted so deplorably and immorally that a viewer has a visceral reaction against it and under no circumstances could ever condone or forgive that action - then that character is "dead to the viewer". DTC even understands this as he had Max Branning say that to his daughter Lauren.

Ultimately if the viewer stops caring about the characters and gets fed up with the storylines then that viewer will stop caring about the show itself and may decide to do something else in the evenings when EE is broadcast.

I think they aren't ruined but I find all of the characters' actions interesting.

There are too many unlikable characters floating around but I do recall people saying Max and Kat had been ruined when they were lying about Alice killing Michael to get Stacey off. So I guess it depends on how long it hangs in collective memory.

I think that's spot on. Eastenders have just gone too far with this storyline. You could accept Ian and Jane lying and covering things up to protect Bobby. Even to the extent of allowing an innocent man going to prison for 20 years.
But there's now so many involved who know the truth and they don't have the same excuse for keeping silent. I find their behaviour loathesome and can't see how they could possibly be redeemed if this continues for months on end. Has a soap ever had a single storyline that has generated so much hatred for so many regular characters ?

I don't understand why you think the character is ruined. Jane isn't some sort of being that can only do good things, she is a human being who has the potential to do bad things.

Just because she is going in a different direction as a character does not mean she is ruined or would you all rather she stayed as Ians skivvy for the remainder of her time on EE?

Thats like saying Walter Whites character on Breaking Bad was ruined because he killed someone.

As for Phil and Sharon, Phil has done this before with Ben and Sharon cares more about the Beales than Max so of course she is going to protect them. Again, Sharon is human and does bad things sometimes. Plus phil actively dislikes Max.

Liam obviously doesn't care about Max, not as much as he cared about Cindy anyway.

As for Abi, the Mitchells are giving her more attention than her father ever gave her so it's not really surprising she would turn on him some day.

Lauren should have just gone to the Police beforehand but was talked out of it by Jane a few times. She just waited until it was too late.
