A young child using a tablet to take a photo, doesn't really count when I said that anyone who does so deserves to be shot I imagine the pic he took brings back great memories of the day out.
.
Hot day, son giggling in the back at the monkeys ripping out the parking sensors (they're required for the MOT!!!), car overheating due to the fan failing. It was a memorable day

I agree, 99% of the time using a tablet for taking pictures should be an offence punishable by a firm smack.

I don't see how it is any different to taking a picture with a smartphone?

Because it looks stupid and usually results in poorer pictures as less thought is put into the camera (e.g. the Hudl 2 doesn't have a flash). At least smartphones are camera sized and intended for photography.

My 70-something parents find an ipad much easier to use that a small smartphone, and the couple of times I tried it it found it more easier to see what the finished photo would look like that with a smartphone.

As for looking stupid, well, says who?

If it's the only thing you have to hand, fine, but I've never understood why you see so many tourists with tablets taking photos outdoors, on public transport etc.

I take a tablet abroad with me, sometimes, but usually leave it in the hotel. I have my phone for when I'm out, and that has a far superior camera.

It can't be for the giant 10 inch viewfinder can it? How do professional photographers cope with their tiny TTL viewfinders then?!

You just know people will be using their iPad Pros soon don't you!

The company isn't doing particularly well- they have cancelled new store openings and have started closing some 24 hr stores at midnight to save cash.

That doesn't mean we won't see a Hudl 3, but only if it is profitable. I can't see Tesco subsidising it.
It just seems weird that, with many arms of the business seriously struggling, TESCO would choose to abandon any further investment or expansion of a range which is making good money for them.

The HUDL tablets were mainly designed to sell Blinkbox services, and Tesco no longer owns Blinkbox, so I would be very surprised if they bring out a new HUDL.
Yes, it appears that the Hudl was designed simply to drum up sales for Blinkbox and also as an experiment by TESCO to see if they could crack the tech market. They have done so and the Hudl2 was also a success so it seems strange that they would now choose to abandon the venture.

When they launched the Hudl 2 they admitted they'd ditched plans to do a smartphone as the likes of Motorola had that sewn up (Moto E, Moto G etc).

I think they proved there was no equivalent cheap, but high spec, tablet and arguably there still isn't.

There's probably no need for a Hudl 3 because most apps and games don't need much more performance than this offers today (for most people).

I still find my Nexus 7 from 2013 is fine for my needs.

My wife has a Tab S and it's definitely faster and has a crisp QHD display but she doesn't use it anywhere near enough to justify the extra cost IMO.

How do you know they are making any money from it? Their margins might be low by the time you factor in repairs/replacements.

If they keep selling the current model and don't waste money on a new one, they should be able to make a good margin.

I'm sure at £99 (or half price with clubcard points) it will still do well this Christmas. It's considerably better than what Amazon is selling, although people may assume that newer equals better.

I'm guessing that the Hudl wasn't very profitable. There's a reason why Apple charges hundreds!! But it was a brand that gave Tesco kudos and they could have used as a base to expand into home entertainment may be. You'd need a visionary in charge to make more of that. I bet Tesco's decisions are made by a committee of dullards.

Apple charges hundreds because it's their main business and they have the reputation to get away with it. They also spend more on the product.

Tablets are a small side business to Tesco.

Aren't tablet sales meant to have tailed off anyway? Primarily because most people who want one have probably already gone out and bought one and they're keeping them for longer.

Yes. I think sales have dived, precisely because once you've got one you probably don't need a new one.

Especially as tablets are often so rarely used.

I think the smartphone boom has had a lot to do with it- smartphone sales are still on the rise whereas tablets seem to be now in a gradual decline. There is no longer very much that a tablet can do which a smartphone cannot.

Yes, but personally I prefer the larger screen of a tablet.

Tablets aren't going anywhere, they will just evolve at a slower pace....

Was planning on buying the hudl 3 for kids at xmas but now have to do some research and look at other tablets between £100 - £150. They have the original hudl which still works ok but after 2 years of the battery being charged up nearly everyday it doesnt hold much charge anymore. Was considering the hudl 2 but looks like it may be coming to the end of its life, only white and black on website both out of stock.

Anyone got experience with the galaxy tab 4 8.0. I know specs arent great but most important features for me is battery life and build quality.

It's such a shame you can't still get the Nexus 7, or that Google didn't release a successor (the 9 and Pixel C aren't really aimed at the same market) as native Android makes my Nexus 7 nicer to use than my wife's newer Galaxy Tab S which lags with TouchWiz despite a far superior chipset.

For value, I'd still say the Hudl 2 is best but a portable battery charger is maybe advisable if you use it a lot away from mains power. That's about the only issue though.

Build quality really is rather good on the Hudl 2, and its no more "end of life" than the Galaxy Tab that you mention. And the Hudl 2 is a rather well built device.

I'm really impressed with my Hudl2, think Tesco might stick with this for a little while longer.
