Janet Jackson-Unbreakable. Thoughts?
hallowxmas448

What are your thoughts on Janets new album release?
I think its really well produced and great to have the fabulous trio Lewis/Jam/Jackson all back again.
Anyone else think how similar Janet's voice is to Michael's on The great forever?

Apologies if this thread has been started...Have checked and could not find one .

I'm not the biggest fan of hers, but I think it's quite a good record. A huge improvement over her recent releases.
And yes, she sounds a lot like Michael!

Haven't heard it yet but some critics are saying it's her best work since All For You. I personally thought Discipline was an excellent album though. Damita Jo and 20 YO were generally weak though had a few decent tracks.

it's ok. nothing great. it doesn't have any standout tracks to match control, RN or janet but there's nothing awful on it. it's one of the best since those albums but that doesn't really say too much. it's quite laid back, but not as laid back as d'angelo or maxwell. no obvious big hit single stuff on it. at least they kept away from the by the numbers "EDM" pop lite crap

Her best album in over a decade.

It has soul and you can tell a lot of heart is in the songs.

'Shoulda Known Better' says otherwise.

It really is a return to form imo. Her best album since The Velvet Rope.

I absolutely love this album. Easily her best since Velvet Rope (although I have to say I love Discipline too!). So many stunning tracks.

She just sounds so good and the album has so many highlights. I'm also thrilled that we don't have to put up with her usual dozen interludes thoughout. The first half (Side A) is pretty much flawless. Dammn Baby, Burnitup, Broken Hearts Heal (amazing layered buildup) Shoulda Known Better, No Sleeep... just amazing!!! Promise of You is beautiful too. I was a bit miffed that the track 'Promise' was so short because I thought it sounded wonderful. so I was very happy when I realised the whole track was a bonus track

I don't think anyone is expecting Janet Jackson to have a big hit single in 2015. It looks like the album is going to do quite well despite not having a hit single on it.

It's a shame Madonna didn't do the same thing in 2012 instead of releasing the dire MDNA.

regardless of what anyone expects, with the right track she could have had a hit single. almost anyone well known artist could

yeah. maybe she thought she tried rnb and that's why hard candy flopped. its incredible she had one of the hottest producers at the time and made such a dud. that maybe turned her back to the dance-pop stuff which is well over tired

the janet album may be lacking obvious hits but it's a lot more listenable than anthing madonna has released in a long time

Madonna tried her hand at R&B in 1994 on the Bedtime Stories album. It's her most underrated work to date. Such a strong record, although to be fair R&B as a genre was far more tuneful in the 90s compared to 2008 when Hard Candy came out. Now R&B is virtually non-existent and is pretty much merged into EDM.

Why does there have to be a rivalry between Madonna and Janet fans? I like both! You don't have to knock Madonna down to build Janet up!

Madonna wasn't jumping on any EDM bandwagon by doing MDNA. She has always at her heart been a dance artist. Janet on the other hand has mostly been a R&B based artist, so it would look dumb for her to do a EDM based record, where as Madonna it is her natural base.

Well known artists over a certain age won't have a hit single because radio doesn't play them no matter what it sounds like and because the younger audience who buys singles aren't interested.
However older well known artists can have a hit album.
Hard Candy really wasn't a full on R&B album. It still had a a lot of dance and electronic influences. And it was hardly a flop given that it spawned 4 Minutes which was quite a big hit.
Again, not sure why we have to compare Madonna and Janet and say one is better than the other. Is it because they are both women? They are very different artists. Rebel Heart is a strong album and in my opinion I prefer it to Janet's new album but everyone's taste in music is different.

I really like Janet's new album. Her strongest in a long time. Yeah scary how much she sounds like Michael on The Great Forever.

Discipline had a few good tracks
I've always loved 'all nite' from Damita Jo. A piss poor album but I always loved that track.

that's completely untrue. have a look through the charts in the uk and us and then start looking up the ages of some of the band members of radiohead, u2, coldplay, rem etc

madonna is older than janet and she's played on the radio and has hits

When was the last time radiohead, U2, Coldplay or REM had a huge hit single? REM has been broken up and hasn't released anything for years! I haven't heard those artists being played on Top 40 radio, maybe ocasionally on rock oriented radio. They sell a lot of albums and often debut high on the album charts, but not on the single charts. There's a big difference between having a hit single and a hit album. Older listeners tend to buy albums from their favorite artists, not singles.

As you love to point out, Madonna's recent singles have not been played on the radio and haven't been hits.

It's interesting how everything get's compared to madonna. Why not compare to say Celine Dion or JLO? No, it's always Madonna.

Obviously she is still relevant.

I know right....If Whitney is still alive, would she be compared to Janet? I wonder....

Just about every thread on any female artist gets compared to Madonna somehow.

if you use Wikipedia you can look up those artists and see the singles part of the discography and see the chart positions. you should be able to google up all sort of information, such as lists of top 40 singles in the uk and us and then see who has hits and goolge them up. there are many artists of similar age or older than janet who have hits. perhaps not as constantly, but the long and short of it is you can have a hit single if you have a good enough track that's popular, regardless of age. some of the folk in the charts are older than you may think

Not bad, I've just finished listening to it.

Not really my cup of tea but she's the best female dancing performer of all times.
