My dear old pussy cat........

........ is 23 years old, and not too good at the moment. She has been amazingly well considering her age with a great appetite, but last night as she was sleeping on the settee next to me, she suddenly gave a start and howled then slid off the settee onto the floor where she went into a spasm of some sort, her legs were going like the clappers and I thought she was having a heart attack or seizure. I stroked her for about 10mins until the jerking stopped, then she got to her feet and staggered into the kitchen where the food bowls were and started eating, I put some fresh food down for her and she wolfed it down. Today she is very fragile, stumbling around, not sure of where she is. I was wondering if anyone else's pet has suffered this sort of thing and what the outcome was? I hate her being like this, and always hoped she would pop off in her sleep, always dreaded having to make the decision to have her PTS.
Is there any hope of any improvement?

aw, bless her!

maybe she had a stroke of some kind - can you take her to the vet to get checked out? that is what I would do

It was clear to me this morning that although she is still breathing, she has 'gone'. I don't drive anymore so the vet came to the house and PTS. It's about this time that I have my morning coffee and she comes onto my knee for a tummy tickle, I am going to miss this more than anything.

You did the right thing. It hurts of course but remember the good times fondly.

Yes, I think this is the best thing to do, and although she is no longer here, I can still feel the softness of her fur, when I have my morning coffee, i will think of her and remember her warm, round belly and how she loved me stroking it.

Life feels really strange at the moment.

So sorry that you have lost your old puss. Take comfort that she knew she was loved so very much and that her passing was peaceful and in of her home.

RIP little one

Awwww, I am so very sorry for your loss.

I used to have cats, and they all lived to 18 years old ... so your girl must have had a happy and healthy life.

It is the silly things you remember isn't it. Like you say, her sitting on your lap at coffee time. You will be sad, but eventually you will remember her face and feel happiness.

I wish you all the best, take care.

So sorry Daisy for your loss. Not the best way to start a week, is it? As someone else said, think of the happy times and over those 23 years, I'm sure you had plenty.

Well it's been a funny old day, never realised how much I organised my day around my old puss. Despite her 23 years, she had a good old appetite. I always made sure she had plenty of food & water to see her through the night, but she was always good & ready for her breakfast. Washing her dishes, clearing out her cat box at least twice a day, lots of cuddles and generally making sure she was warm & comfortable. How many times today I have glanced at the sofa where she normally slept. I seem to have so much 'free time' now - and I don't like it.

Aww Daisy so sorry you lost your little coffee and cuddles companion. How upsetting for you; she'd been around the place so long, it must be hard to remember a time when she wasn't there. It's going to feel strange for a bit to come, I'm afraid, but that's very natural, especially during what would have been your snuggly times. Your girl sounded like a wonderful friend and I'm glad she had a long and magnificent life with someone so kind and caring to look after her.

So sad for you - what a wonderful life you must have given her for her to live a happy healthy life so long with you.

Thank you both - oddly enough, she had uterine & digestive problems for her entire life, she was the runt of the litter and had a funny eye, no one wanted her. I often wonder if any of her siblings lived for so long? Finding it hard to accept that I will never see her again or feel her lovely soft fur.

My wife always says that the cat that has passed away would expect you to pass on that love to a poor cat in need of rescuing (she is a moggy champion).

She still gets sad about those that have gone but gets great joy in taking rescue cats and is really patient with them as they often take time to build up trust.

You obviously have plenty of love to give .

Sorry to hear about your cat. She reached a ripe old age though, so don't be too sad.

Yes, I will no doubt be going along to the cat sanctuary before too long, although it will be difficult seeing all those poor pussy cats needing a home. I shall ask for the one that nobody else wants.

That would be such a lovely thing to do and hope we have more humans like this seeing as the upset you have to deal with and still thinking of helping other cat's is in itself unselfish and kind.

Respect to you daisy and hope your heart heals fast.

(not long lost a cat)

it may be too soon but perhaps another wee friend for you.........

I cant imagine life without my puss so I can only imagine how hard and sad it must be - 23 years is a ripe old age tho and Im sure you have many happy memories

Time is a great healer but also getting another kitty is too of course, its probably way to soon to even think about getting another one but maybe one day

sending hugs and hope you are doing ok today

Thanks everyone for your comforting messages. Yes it will be a little while before I take on another cat, hard as it is, I need time to think about my old puss and accept that she won't be coming back.

Kittens are always so popular with people looking for a pet cat, I actually would prefer an older cat, it breaks my heart thinking of these older cats suddenly having to face so many changes in their life when for one reason or another they find themselves in a cattery.

Because I live alone and work during the day, I never wanted a kitten. They grow up very quick anyway so I was quite happy to have whatever the shelter had available.
