Lying in dusty old vaults

From the footage shown on the programmes such as "Top Of The Pop2" and sounds of the sixties" there must be hundreds of hours of music footage in the vaults that never gets shown.

It's a shame because a lot of this could be sharpened up and released on DVDs. Would make a bit of money and be invaluable to music collectors.

They did release a couple of TOTP compilation tapes in the days of VHS. I believe they didn't do well enough in sales to overcome sufficiently the expensive clearances of the tracks. They didn't make enough dosh, in other words.

The general trouble with TOTP is that fans of one act really only want that act's performances. E.G. a Thin Lizzy fan would not be interested in The Nolans' performance on the same edition. Couple in difficulties with third-party material, and I believe it's generally perceived as not worth the bother.

Add to that the fact that, due to the well-known issues with people such as Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter and so on, TOTP really doesn't have a cool image. It's more the butt of jokes these days.

Some TOTP clips do get licenced to appear on an artist's DVD. Clips from other shows too.

I'm not the keen TV pundit I once was sitting with the VCR primed in case someone I liked would appear on a kid's show or what not but clearly the lion's share of old music appearances never get rebroadcast and may not even exist in the networks' vault any more; much of it resides with collectors who have no commercial right to exploit it. The same handful of compilations seem to get repeated ad infinitum on our TV channels.

Unless a commercial opportunity is seen much of this archival content is unlikely to see any official recirculation and it's probably best to trawl the likes of You Tube for these semi-lost clips made available again by the fans. I've found music videos for tracks that I never thought had videos made and all sorts of foreign TV appearances and interviews that I'd never have seen at the time.

There was a time when such material was mostly traded by fans through the post and now it can be found and recorded relatively more easily.
