Interesting piece in the Guardian on BBC critics who are trying to stop the BBC making entertainment shows like Strictly.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...-like-strictly

Quote:
“BBC presenter Andrew Marr has said a “trap is being set” for the BBC by critics who say it should not do popular programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing, saying the “whole thing would collapse” without them.”

Quote:
“Culture secretary John Whittingdale has previously said it was “debatable” whether there was a public service argument for Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC’s biggest show behind the Great British Bake Off.

“The minute we’re doing the non-popular stuff, they go, ‘Oh, far fewer people are listening to you, watching you, therefore we’ll cut your licence fee’. So you can’t win.”

Quote:
“Marr was speaking on the eve of the deadline for the public to send submissions to the government’s green paper on the future of the BBC, which singled out entertainment shows.”

I've replied to the Government's "consultation" on the future of the BBC here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/consul...c-consultation

Their survey is a nightmare, this is an easier version (I believe it feeds into the same review):
https://speakout.38degrees.org.uk/su...c-consultation

Deadline is Thursday night Strictly fans !

Thanks. I completed the "easy" version!

Completed.
I am deeply suspicious when politicians get involved with broadcasting.

I don't think you can delete your own threads, but you can probably as the mods to do it.

Just completed the 38Degrees one, and yes, it does seem to feed in to the same review as I immediately received an acknowledgement from bbccharterreviewconsultation+noreply@culture.gov.uk

I remember now, I got that too. So you're right, it must feed into the Government's review

I signed this petition too, that got a reply from Government Department for Culture as well

Yes, that 'easy' version is a godsend, isn't it. Completed.

OP - just a thought: I nearly by-passed this thread thinking the title meant you wanted to see Andrew Marr as a celeb on the show! I don't know if campaigning is within the 'guidelines' but it's still a story relating to the future of Strictly, so I wonder if a different thread title might catch more traffic?

Yeah, I double took on that title afterwards myself. I don't think I can change it now.

What would be a good title for the thread?

You could contact the mods and request that they change it for you:

Unfortunately I got to the end and .. "By submitting information you are agreeing to 38 Degrees keeping you informed about campaigns and ..."

You can opt out of this when you start getting emails. I've done it before with their online petitions.

Hmmm. 'Strictly under threat'. 'Andrew Marr concerned about future of Strictly'
(Not terribly snappy, I know...)

“BBC argues case for popular shows like Strictly”

Quote:
“The BBC is expected to argue the case for popular shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Sherlock as it responds to a government green paper on its future.

The broadcaster will argue the public "wants and expects the BBC to deliver entertainment," amid suggestions it is too focused on ratings.

It will also make a case for the popular music stations Radio 1 and 2, saying they play a greater variety of music than commercial rivals.

The response is due at 10:00 BST.”

Years ago someone came up with the crackpot idea that as soon as any programme became popular on BBC then it should be sold to competitors.

I almost by-passed the thread as well but glad I decided to have a look. I've completed the survey. This government are going all out to smash public services, which includes the BBC. It's disgraceful.

I think Whittingdale rolled back on his views on Strictly, to support it. If you say the BBC can't do entertainment shows like Strictly, then you might as well shut BBC1 down.
1) Strictly was a BBC generate format which has generated lots of money through selling on the format internationally. Something like The Voice where the BBC PAID to use the format is far less justifiable
2) There is an educational aspect to it, teaching people of all ages to dance
3) It generally isn't scheduled directly against the X-Factor, but slightly before it.
4) An awful lot of people enjoy the programme, many of them bedrock Tory votors!

The BBC would be insane to get rid of Strictly. It is at a much higher level than Z lists celebs on Big Brother and eating bugs in the jungle.

I am disappointed that the thread wasn't about Andrew Marr being so inspired by Jeremy Vine that he wants to go on Strictly next year though!

I agree. The BBC are criticised if they don't produce family friendly programming and you can't get more family friendly than SCD for Saturday night viewing. So much better than that rubbish singing programme on ITV!
