Tablets are mobile computers with a touchscreen. Hundreds of companies make them and they can run a variety of operating systems. IPads are just one type of tablet that is produced by Apple.

Often people use the term iPad as a general word for tablet..... In the same way vacuum cleaners are often referred to as hoovers

Ok, how do you connect to the internet with a tablet ? Does it connect via my home btinternet broadband in a different room so I can use it around the house ? Does it connect to wifi in hotels, cafes etc like your mobile phone can do ? Does it run apps from stereo systems such as an app from a streamer amplifier like marantz mcr610 (v important and the whole point of this question). And what is the difference between a 100 quid tablet and a,400quid tablet, us it hard drive space and usual computer software etc ?

In simple terms a tablet is basically like a large mobile phone but normally no simcard facility ie you run same android or ios apps except phone related apps. You can use skype though.

More expensive tablets are generally more powerful, more memory, more storage capacity, so better if you want high speed games etc. Problem with high end tablets, is in a year or so, they are only mid range.

The best advice I would say is to only pay what you need to to meet your needs.
Its a bit like buying a cheap car and a dear car. They will get you from A to B, but a dearer one will have better performance. If all you need is to do some modest surfing, send emails, then a more budget range tablet might suit.

If you want to play fast games, then a more expensive one might suit.

Decide what you need, then pay the appropriate price.

1. Ok, how do you connect to the internet with a tablet ? Does it connect via my home btinternet broadband in a different room so I can use it around the house ?

2. Does it connect to wifi in hotels, cafes etc like your mobile phone can do ?

3. Does it run apps from stereo systems such as an app from a streamer amplifier like marantz mcr610 (v important and the whole point of this question).

4. And what is the difference between a 100 quid tablet and a,400quid tablet, us it hard drive space and usual computer software etc ?
Questions 1-3, yes.

4. The difference are processor speed, screen quality, storage space and build quality.

As mentioned above, a tablet is a lot like a smartphone. If you have an Android or Apple smartphone that does what you want in question 3, the a tablet running the same OS will do the same.

Having done some research for you, the Marantz Remote app is available for both Android and Apple iOS:

Terrific answer. I'm always reminded of the craze to build your own hi-fi in the late 70s. People would spend literally hundreds of pounds, even then, for the best but the benefits were totally useless when used in the average household. And, on a personal note, these hi-fi nerds usually had appalling music taste.

One of my friends is a reviewer of audio kit .... and whilst I'm no longer an "audiophile", those systems costing a few thousand are generally considerably better than systems costing a few hundred.

And yes, they still have appaling music taste - my old mate has what you could call "eclectic musical tastes"

But this is no different to phone reviewers (and tech bloggers) who claim that you absolutely have to have a 4.6" 1080p screen, and that anything that posts an Antutu score of less than 50,000 is "slow".

A Windows Phones uses the Windows Phone operating system
An Android phone/tablet uses the Android operating system
An Apple iPhone/iPad uses the iOS operating system

As I've already said, an Android tablet or phone will run the Marantz app, as will an Apple iPhone/iPad.

Yes, your broadband will work.

Windows 7 (on your PC?) is irrelevant.

Yeah - AC/DC is pure unadulterated noise no matter how much you spend.

thank you . So, if I buy a tablet outright, there is nothing else to pay, o monthly payments, I.just log on using my home broadband. Or bt road and WiFi anywhere I can pick it up ?

I looked at an Acer tablet in Tesco for 79 quid or a Samsung galaxy 10 inch for 129. Would even those basic models do the job, and does anybody have alternative recommendations.

This reply brought to you from a Tesco Hudl2. Does everything I need from a tablet - including controlling my AV amp and Chromecast, plus emails, browsing, mapping my mountain bike rides, etc etc.

I second this. My Hudl2 is brilliant. Just upgraded to Lollipop and there no issues.

Yes, there were undoubtedly good systems but totally wasted in a suburban semi or 2 up 2 down.

If audiophiles like AC/DC then they certainly have good taste in music.

its got good reviews. Do you have to subscribe to a monthly payment for these tablets, and other tablets ? Basically, this is going to be a present and I don't want to have any spin off prices attached, just using home wifi, or hotel wifi and running that streamer/amp app, pure and simple.

TBH, if I'd realised you can just buy these without paying extra payments like that, I'd have had one ages ago.

And what about the operating systems ie KitKat, Jellybean......is any of these superior to others etc

Its just a one off payment, no additional on going charges. Same goes for most tablets (I say most, as some do have 3G/4G variants)

Both of my sons have Hudl 2s (previously had the Hudl), one primarily for reading comics, the other for gaming and youtube. Brilliant devices.

The only obvious difference between KitKat and Lollipop on Android is cosmetic. Looks a little different, actual operation is virtually the same.

The little star is still sitting in my notifications...

It's all working so well at the moment I'm reluctant to tempt fate by upgrading. Perhaps in a few months.

Well, there certainly is an app. But there are also comments saying it doesn't work on Lollipop, so you might want to avoid upgrading the tablet (if Lollipop isn't already pre-installed) or seek alternatives to the official app.

Maybe that's because Logitech have stopped making squeezeboxes ? Useful info though and I'll.bear that in mind . Do you have a link to where you saw those comments please ?
