iPad Mini: volums starts reducing itself for no reason

I was this morning listening to the radio and playing on my iPad Mini when the little volume window appeared and the volume reduced itself. At first I thought I had touched something which was another way of reducing volume, but within minutes it was obvious it was nothing to do with me.

I googled the problem but none of the situations seemed to apply (one guy complained is iPod Nano volume reduced while he was jogging, but that was blamed on sweat. And others had the same problem with their iPhone, but no solutions were offered).

The obvious thing to do was to restore the iPad which I am now doing and I hope that will cure it. But has anyone here come across the problem or knows what might be going on?

It could be a physical problem; dirt in the 'volume down' button.

Total restore seems so far to have cured the problem.
