Knife sharpeners

I am temporarily (I hope) without the use of one arm. Has anyone tried and can recommend an electric knife sharpener?

Nope, and if you've got decent knives, I'd be wary about them taking too much off the edge.

But.. if you use a steel, do you have something you could make a hole in and stand the steel in like a post? And important elf and safety warning.. make sure it's secure least you lose the use of your other arm.. And same applies to using sharp pointy things as well.

Not used an electric one but the AnySharp has a suction base to secure it to the surface.

Yes the AnySharp is effective but a bit crude, strips off lots of metal.

For daily sharpening I use a Taylors Eye Witness Classic Chantry Knife Sharpener, it might work using one hand only.
. . . . . . . Actually I just went and tested it and it does work one-handed.

The only electric one I have is the Chef's Choice 3 Stage Sharpener. Though my knives rarely get blunt enough to need that one.

Thanks for all your replies. If my hospital appointment today gives good results maybe I won't need a sharpener at all

Good luck!

The Taylors one looks like it would be possible to clamp to a table with some G-clamps, if it's not got mounting bits already. Bit fiddly I guess, but potentially a lot safer

Probably too late now, but if you're in such a situation for long, perhaps one option would be to buy a cheap knife from a supermarket (£2-3) and a crude sharpener from wherever you can find one (Poundland, Poundstretcher, etc) and use those. You can wear down the knife all you like and not worry about stripping metal from good knives meant to last decades.

In the kitchen, I probably use just one sharp knife 99% of the time. Occasionally using a second, smaller one, and that's often out of laziness.
