Five pints with change from a fiver!!

No, not abroad in some paradise where prices are ridiculously cheap.
Today in Cardiff Bay.
The Mount Pleasant - a Wetherspoons with an impressive array of real ales.
I asked for a taster of an American pale ale (5.2%) at £2.65 but then opted for an old favourite, Old Speckled Hen.
As it was poured I stood in front of the pump and only then noticed the price - £0.99p!

Me: 99p??
Barman: is that what it says? (Price shown on front of pump)
Me: Yes.
Barman (peering over the pump): That doesn't sound right does it?
Me: No it doesn't but it sounds good to me
Barman: I'd better go check.
He reappeared after a minute and said "Yep - 99p"

I didn't have five - just the one, I was driving

Bargain. It won't stay at that price for long though, maybe a mistake.

Not a mistake, just part of their real ale festival promotion. It's on till 1st Novemeber, not sure if the 99p lasts till the end though or if they put something else on.

Wonder how many paid full price without knowing.

The tills are automatic, it would have just come up automatically if they bought it while on promo.

What full price?
It was displayed at £0.99 and the till rang it up at £0.99.
The barman just wasn't aware.
I imagine if someone simply ordered a single pint he'd regard it as odd but ordered with several other drinks or food he might not give it a thought.

As an aside they had a notice displayed about a beer festival coming soon - Friday to Monday.
I assumed a weekend festival.
Nope, Friday 16th October to Sunday 1st November- 16 days!

Wetherspoons used to have Greene King IPA for 99p but the brewery got upset that they were devaluing one of their premium brands. As a compromise Wetherspoons agreed to change it to Ruddle's, also brewed by Greene King.

Most Wetherspoons always sell at least one real ale for 99p, up here it's Old Speckled Hen for the Real Ale festival but then it'll be changing back to Ruddles.

I love Wetherspoons. Great choice of ales which rotate monthly, superb guest ales all year round, and fantastic prices. One advantage of living up North, a pint of Guinness is only £2.35

Most Wetherspoons do not sell beer for 99p as the norm.

In all likelihood, the beer was a poor seller and probably getting close to it's best before date, hence trying to sell it as cheap as possible so as to get some money in the till rather than tipping the barrel down the drain.

I can only speak from experience, but the Lloyd's No. 1 where I live has done since they dropped the price of Greene King to 99p back in 2009. Are you trying to tell me that one of its beers is always near the sell-by date?

Or it might not have been. Wetherspoons sell beer at fantastic prices and people look for every reason they can to slag them off for it. If other pubs followed their lead they might not be losing so much money.

Cheapest where I am is £1.95 during the week and £2.25 at the weekend.

I do know my Old Speckled Hen, Paul and it was as good as any I've tasted.
In fact, at 99p, it tasted blooming lovely

PS I've never seen a pint at 99p in any Wetherspoons.
The Mount Stewart in Cardiff Bay is definitely a cut above some of the city versions.
Light, roomy and airy - two floors.
Outside seating with sea views and an upstairs sun terrace which was packed on Friday as it was a scorcher -plenty of room inside.
There's a German Beer Festival this weekend - lots of beer tents and music and people paying top prices for a pint about 500yds away from a 99p real ale.

Not really a fan of Old Speckled Hen, I find it a bit bland but 99p for a pint is ridiculously cheap! I've never really come across anything that cheap, occasionally a pub down the road from me sell off anything they have left from their beer festivals at £1 a pint but that's pretty rare.

No I am not, but cask ale by its very nature doesn't have the longest of shelf lives.

I can assure you I have absolutely no reason to slag them off, believe me.

I remember when I first started drinking out at 15 (2002 time) a bottle of Reef (alcopop of vodka and orange juice) in my local wetherspoons was 99p, it then went up to £1.09, then £1.49. Not sure it's price now or if it's even sold anymore. The Monday offers probably prices some drinks under £2 but 99p now for now is great.

Bland compared to what beers Jambo?
It's 5% and fairly robust.

Draught OSH has been 4.5% for a few years now.

I think the bottled version is still 5% +
