My One Plan with Three is coming to an end in the next 2 weeks. I am happy enough with the Three service, but I no longer want an expensive monthly contract, and plan to buy a handset outright and go onto a SIM only deal after my minimum term ends. Only thing is I want to keep my number, and I understand that they won't allow me to transfer the number between contracts like this.

I don't particularly want the hassle of having to port the number out, then back in. Would Three allow me to downgrade to PAYG for a month, then take out a SIM only deal after this time, whilst retaining the number?

I switched from The One Plan straight to a sim only plan last month as I was in the last month of my 2 year contract with no trouble at all. Just popped into a store and they sorted it out and activated it straight away. Didn't have to mess about with number porting at all and I've kept my number.

I've had no issues downgrading from handset to SIM only in the past. I think the issue may arise if you want to go from contract to prepay, but that could just be a dodgy retention line.

Over the last 5 years I've been from One Plan to sim only (30-day) to PAYG and back to sim only (12-month) and the only time I remember porting my number was when I went from PAYG to contract.

Just ring CS and tell them you want to change price plan, you aren't needing a transfer of any sort to do that.

Three classes this as an Upgrade.

You should be able to do it by calling 333 from your phone.

You shouldn't have any problems going from a handset contract to a SIM-only contract.

I guess they might want to sell you on a new handset contract, but if so just clearly state you're not interested (sometimes people asking for a change to SIM-only might just be angling for a better deal on a new handset contract).

Thanks everyone. I have read on here in the past about people having problems taking a number between contracts with the same provider, and having to port out and in again, but it is reassuring to know that I should be able to do this.

I also seem to remember reading that they are wanting all customers off the unlimited tethering One Plan, so I suppose they will be keen to help me get onto one of their sim only deals.

I haven't come across that problem - though there are (or at least were) some providers who don't have a process for swapping you from contract to pay as you go on their own network. (The roundabout solution to that if you wanted to stay on that network being porting out and then porting back in as a new PAYG customer.)

That's done by people who are on contract and don't want to upgrade as the deals for a new customer are better than the upgrade offers.

They then port out to PAYG elsewhere and then port back onto a new contract, as if they are a new customer.
