If Jay holds his nerve and doesn't crumble....he may take the winner off Peter...

I don't think it can ruin the series for me, since I can FF past his dances and the judges gushing if it gets too annoying, but it will be harder to enjoy it if the judges keep seeing him as so much better than the others. It will be like when Ray Quinn was in Dancing on Ice.
But he was so much better than the others

No, they weren't nearly as good as some of the judges seemed to think.

It was over-marked, over-rated and over-praised.

One 9 and the rest 8s would have been appropriate marks.
This.

As I initially posted, it was VERY GOOD but nowhere near as good as the praise/marks it got.

I think Jay will peak too soon and not win. Let's see.

I thought it was awesome. Great jive content but also reflected the feel of the film excellently.
I've never seen the film but have watched that clip with John Travolta and Uma Thurman and much prefer Jay and Aliona's version, fantastic dancing, choreography and music ..... loved the Misirlou section (which I believe means Egyptian girl), the audience reaction, the judges comments and Jay standing there as though in a daze ..... also thought Aliona looked good with dark hair, Jay's my clear favourite now

But he was so much better than the others - at this stage of the competition. At least that's my opinion - and it looks like that's shared by a good chunk of this board and the audience at the show.

Doesn't mean it'll always be that way. I expect others will improve and get to a comparable standard (Anita for me is picking up really well, Georgia and Helen also have potential). And Jay may not get better and fall into the pack (I doubt it though - Aliona won't let that happen )

But right now, I thought the gushing was completely deserved. That dance would have been a 40 later in the series without doubt

Well it seems popular with the judges and the audience and many here,so it must have done a lot right.
I thought it was the most sharply executed routine of the night, but, last week I found Jay a trifle insipid,so perhaps the comparisons with Sophie Ellis-Bextor's charleston are valid and this routine particularly suited him.

Imho that dance deserved 10 across the board, I have no idea how they could have done
any better....

People on this forum are a bunch of LIARS! Every single one of you I got all excited and watched his dance first, he is a very good dancer it goes without saying and it was an 'okay' dance. Didn't deserve a 10. Man, I do not want Aliona to be the first pro to win twice.

A small mercy.
I see Peter as Jason Donovan, theatrical, but doomed to lose to Aliona's boyband boy mark 2.

That's kinda my point about Jay. Indeed, if Jay's jive is the best dance ever in Strictly (at as least one of the judges claimed), Jay is even further ahead of the rest than Ray was in DOI.

I prefer the film version by far. If it had been Jay and Aliona's in the film, it wouldn't have stood out to me. It would just have been a good, but not especially interesting dance.

I agree that when Ray Quinn was on DOI, it took a lot of the anticipation out of the competition knowing from the start he would win. I think the problem was there was no one else in the line up that year who could really challenge him for the winning position, since he was so phenomenally good. Had he been on DOI the year Suzanne Shaw and Chris Fountain were on, for example, the winner might not have been a foregone conclusion.

However, it doesn't usually work like that on Strictly. The judges' favourites tend to have to struggle to get the public vote - in fact, it's not at all unknown for them to be eliminated before the final. Add to that the fact that some of the other celebs, such as Helen and Anita for example, are also very good and it's actually not guaranteed that Jay will win.

Exactly!

He was brilliant. I don't care what dance training he's had or what anyone else has had. I thought he was great.

I watch Strictly to enjoy the dances, good, bad or indifferent.

If they were all novices the show would be boring for me. As long as everyone tries their best I'm happy.

I'm amazed how many experts there are on here to give such critique at times

I applaud all the dancers. Get in there

It was brilliant - best dance of the night by a million miles and best jive I've seen on any series for years and years.

In two weeks it would have got 40, so if anything, they were under-marked. Brilliant, brilliant dance.

Me neither, especially if Jay turns out to be a recycled Harry McDullard.
He's certainly no Ray Quinn.

Anita, Helen, Georgia, Peter all put in fantastic performances tonight. Katie had an off day but has put in fantastic performances for the last two weeks. There are plenty there who are perfectly capable of beating Jay to the title.

For me, at least, the problem with Ringer Ray in DOI wasn't that he was sure to win. Even if he didn't win, it would have been just as bad (just as annoying, etc) every week while he was still there.

I loved the dance and as the judges had already been dishing out 7s and 8s then they had to go to 9. Bruno marks fairly randomly anyway.

I do think that the scoring so far has been high, especially in week 1 but I think that they will now start to mark harsher.

Never seen the film or a clip from it so haven't seen that version.

Part of me thinks it was totally strategic putting Jay and Aliona on last. Is it purely coincidence they supposedly left the "best till' last"?

I wonder if he's the producers favourite? The studio went completely OTT.

Not saying he was bad because he was very very good, but not THAT good. Certainly not worthy of a 10, in week 3. In my opinion.

My faves in Movie Week: Kellie & Kevin, Daniel & Kristina, Anita & Gleb, and Helen & Aljaz.

Was it actually that good and worth a 10 so early in the series?
The main purpose of the scores is to place the dances in order. We have seen 10's for a lot worse dances in the past.

Jay could have 'performed' better and little things like drawing his fingers across his face would have been better if closer to his face etc.

He had 4 days to learn a whole new dance style. I think he must have worked very hard to get to that level in 4 days.

It would have been different if the judges had said they had to go to 9 because of earlier marks and hadn't made it seem they thought it was the best dance ever on strictly, or had a level of technique they'd never seen before, or that it wasn't getting a 10 only because it was week 3. Only Len's comment -- "best dance of the series" -- was reasonable.

Then it sounds like we may agree about Jay's dancing.

But I didn't think Ray was really as good as the judges and others were claiming either.

Perhaps someone will beat Jay, but I'd have found Ray's presence in DOI just as annoying if he hadn't won; and it's looking like it may be the same with Jay.
