There must be something wrong with you if you thought that Jay's dancing tonight was dull, it was one of the most exciting performances in the history of the entire series.
That dance could never be described as dull!

I watched it 4 times, something I never do. It was utterly fabulous! And as dramatic as it sounds, I agree it was one of the most exciting performances in the history of the series too! So entertaining. Just what Saturday night TV is all about. An incredible dance.

It must have been good, even my husband dragged himself away from the Rugby to come down and watch it when I told him how good it was! He even told me he was glad I had paused it so he could see it!

You might be right there. It is starting to look a little bit like we've been had. He did two spins last week like a trained ballet dancer and had cut off his hair as if he were trying to appeal to the little girls.
I wonder if he has revealed his hand too early, making him only two weeks cleverer than Ricky Whittle.
Yet he seem so surprised at getting good comments. He surely knows he can dance?

Edit: I replied to the wrong post...was supposed to be replying to the post about his dance training history

Here's a radical thought

Get a dozen or so slebs with a bit of dance training behind them
Pull the names out of the hat for pro partners
Do away with the judges and just let the public decide
You get good dancing and none of the Anne Widdcombe/John Sargeant/Judy Murray/Russell Grant/etc (bless 'em) duffers

What does that give you? .............

No whingeing about ringers
We see competent dancing
The best* dancers win (*probably aka most popular)

Would that be better than what we have now? IMO, probably

Am I being serious? Ish

You can bet your booty it wouldn't have been.

Poor unemployed James, wittering away in his jammies. A 'has been' with no stage, no role and a great deal of pointless anger.
........and who thinks Peter's dance this evening was worth 9s

Natalie Gumede didn't win.

It is partly based on dancing and partly on popularity.

Rachel Stevens was the best dancer her Series. Ricky Whittle was the best dancer his Series. etc.

I agree, much as I admire Carol for example, I am not sure I would watch if they were all of that standard - if I did watch it would have to be a few weeks in when they had improved. I love to watch dance, although I am not good at it myself, so I like to see it done so well.
Ah but just look at the likes of Jeremy and daniel and Anita . They all started from scratch like Carol, yet all have got better in varying degrees . Kate has been a revelation . All improving in some way while carol just stays week one material . Dancing clearly isn't her thing any more that it was Widdy's or John Sargent's .
It's great watching them grow .

My husband did the same! The dog insisted he wanted to go out just before it came on (typical). He wanted to see it cause I was telling him how wonderful it was so I played it to him on iplayer during the half time of the rugby and he was amazed

I said that watching everyone dancing perfect routines week after week would be dull . Rather pointless and very boring indeed .
Which implies you are entertained by the duffers and/or you want the tortoises to beat the hares.

Not for me I'm afraid. I want to see excellent dancing and am frustrated that we have to wait several weeks into a series to see it WITHOUT the duffers wearing out the FF chevrons on my Sky+ remote

I was avoiding this thread but here we go....

Having dancing training doesnt necesarily mean that you will be very good in this show or that you will win . A LOT of previous celebrities who had dance training did not always live up to the expectations place on them imo. Natalie Gumede comes to mind; with her dance training I expected her to be outstanding and for me she wasn't. Helen has ballet training but I feel like it actually hampers her; she seems quite stiff and rigid to me at times; especially in the Latin.

Jay is THIS good mostly because of his natural ability and Aliona's choreography; yes his dance training helps but not that much imo

Where did I say jay's dance was dull , don't twist my words . Comprehension is all .

I thought this show was all about dancing and what went on outside the show didn't matter?

Or does that only count depending on who is doing the dancing?

Prefer it when they haven't, don't hold it against them if they have but prefer the judges to bring it up for all that have (so far Helen's been singled out a bit as Pixie was last year).

Watching Jay - and Aliona - dance like that every week while be my personal polar opposite of pointless and boring.

Indeed. He was not very good.

Really enjoyed watching Janette though!

What I most assuredly did not say is that "jay's dance was dull" , which is what I was accused of .
It wasn't dull . It was very polished . In fact professional , which is only to be expected after 6 years of training at a prestigious dance academy after all .

Now they have got a man on the Series with a contemporary dance background. He went to dance school from 13 to 19 y.o. then was full time in a successful boy band for 5 years before they split a year ago.

Its not a lot different from several female celebs we have had on the show.

The producers put him with Aliona because they know she can get him to whatever his potential is.

If they give Aliona the right music and theme - as they have in the last 2 weeks - expect more performances of this standard.

I agree...its not a level playing field. Some may not know how to dance, but will come with a huge fan base that will take them far, regardless of how they dance on the night.

Dance training has an obvious advantage in that their performances are better and they are higher on the leaderboard, but they have the disadvantage of the public judging them harshly or not voting for them at all because of their dance training.

What is unfair, is the fact that Helens dance training has been mentioned on the main shows a few times whereas Jays hasn't...and with his surprised look whenever he gets good comments along with his nervousness, I'm sure a lot of the general public are unaware of his training and are seeing him in the same way as people are viewing Anita - a dance talent without training. Theres a lot of viewers ( and many voting viewers) who aren't as involved as we are - only watch the show on a Saturday. I'm sure so many of them know Helen is a trained dancer and judge her more harshly than Jay.

No, it depends on whether the happenings outside the show are dance related .Which it is in this case . Therefore it is relevant .

No Anita Ranis, no Katie Derhams, no Ramps, no Michael Vaughan's triumphant American Smooth, no Denise Lewis, no Austin's jive, no Abbeys waltz, no Louis Smith doing the Dirty Dancing lift with Flavia, no Harry Judd's quickstep, no Gavbot antics, no Nancy Dell'Olio popping out of a glittery coffin dressed in cobwebs swigging champagne, no Gethin, no Colin Jackson doing a box-splits at the end of a quickstep out of sheer joy, no Zoe Ball, no Susanna's paso, no Sophie's Charleston, no...

Some poster have been saying Jay's had 6 years of dance training but in The Wanted's autobiography it says that Jay went to Charlotte Hamilton School of Dance as an after school club and then he went onto do dance at college for 3 years after finishing secondary school so he hasn't had 6 years of training, although I do think that the judges should mention the training he's had as they have mentioned Helen's multiple times.

Exactly ! All the training in the world won't help if you have no natural ability. Jay's not the only one to have had 'training', but there's been no mention of how intense or for how long this was. My thoughts are that if he was so good at drama and dance, he would now be an actor or a professional dancer instead of in a boy band. I suspect his nerves may have played a part in that, as he is clearly nervous, and genuinely shocked at the good comments that he's getting.

Those who have started from scratch also have now had about 3 months intense one to one training with a professional, which could possibly equate to more than some of the 'training' the others have had in the past.

Jay was fabulous and Peter Andre was overmarked

I'd much rather the right music and the right themes were shared out more fairly amongst all the competitors.

Jay attended Newark's Charlotte Hamilton School of Dance and the prestigious Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama in Nottingham.

As of June 2015 Jay has been in the studio with Shytown Music and has been brushing up on his dancing skills
