I was trying to stay quiet but that really made me laugh 😁😁. I'm one of 'the ballroom crowd' you see and I'm determined not to get wound up tonight.

Yes that's true & if he doesn't then there's Daniel O'Dummy with his huge fan base to contend with. Oh & all the Scots voting for Carol and the BBC wanting Anita or Katie or Jeremy to win because they are BBC insiders.

Ringer angst is becoming more than a tad tedious if I may say so.

Feel free to substitute 'more than a tad' with 'mind numbingly'

He looks like he's has a degree of previous dance experience (enough that he's clearly no novice), but that bothers me zero percent because he's great to watch.

Nice to see and be able to enjoy a male contest to this degree so early on with blatant talent, or it is for me anyway. I know lots of viewers like watching the males take a slower upward progression through the show (as it's more often the female contestants like Natalie, Denise, Abbey, Kara etc that tend to have a faster start as already clearly early prospects) but I like the rare occasions when we can enjoy a talented male that not only is already talent but can only get better (if their pro facilitates that potential pretty grease in even further).

They do every year. It's very tedious.

The last time I looked Carol worked for the BBC too so I guess she's now a shoo in as she hasn't had any previous dance experience to detract from her chances

I'm sorry. I can't take much more of her I don't care how wonderful her weather forecast is.

I have a previous dance experience, but you could not tell If one has two left feet one has to work very hard to master what comes naturally to those with a talent. Jay belongs to the latter group, a natural talent. He might not get nines or tens today without the practice, but he'd still be in the upper part of the leaderboard, I think.

Although I like him, I do think it's against the spirit of Strictly having someone with his experience on board.”

I agree with that, to be honest. Frankly, from what I saw of his dance this evening, he may have peaked too soon because if he continues to perform at that level and come top of the leaderboard every week, it may very well end up counting against him in the end if the voting public decide it's not really very fair.

I think it's far more entertaining to see those who were very ropey in Week One making steady progress and then begin to pull fairly challenging routines off in later weeks as their confidence and ability really grows.

I don't dispute that his dancing is good to watch and is to be admired but in some ways it's a bit unfair on the celebs who really are "raw" beginners and who are starting with a far greater disadvantage in the first place. All too often their progress is lost in the shadows and they are often very harshly judged for their mistakes, whilst the person/people who already have background experience in dance get all the praise and their differential experience is not taken into account when being assessed.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that the extent of the skills which the celebrities are expected to acquire are far greater for those with no previous experience and it often seems as if they do not get the same credit for improving which is often very generously given to those who already have some dance experience.

With respect to commentors here, if you don't like these threads, then don't reply to them.

The title of the thread clearly indicates its content, giving ample opportunity to avoid something that might irritate you.

Joining in just pushes the thread to the top and boosts its popularity...perpetuating the cycle that irks you.

If it helps I'm one Scot that won't be voting for her

People that don't like the fact Jay (or any other contestant for that matter) has had previous training will jump on the band wagon and bump threads up anyway.

Those of us that don't like the constant annual moan-fest giving them a wide berth as you suggest (with respect ) will make little if any difference to their prominence imo

I've always been in two minds about this but with people in the acting/singing end of the entertainment business a lot of them will have basic dance training just to make them more employable so unless the show was all just sportspeople, politicians, journalists and reality TV participants you're going to end up having people with training when it comes to actors and singers.

Jay has been open and honest about previous training which I understand mainly relates to contemporary dance.

Wish all competitors were equally up front.

Even politicians or journalists may well have taken dancing classes at some stage in their lives - as do lots of people who eventually end up being teachers, nurses, librarians, IT engineers etc.

Not everyone who does dancing classes in early life subsequently goes on to have a career as a performer or entertainer. I went to dancing classes very briefly as a small child but I doubt any of it would help me now at the age of 52 if I attempted to learn to dance now.

The second dance school he attended for three years included ballroom as part of his course, so not solely contemporary and off to a very good start re ballroom dancing . Yes, he obviously has an aptitude , but you can't get away from the fact that he has had 6 years of dance training AND it included ballroom .

If I went back now, ten years or so since I last did any training, the only thing it would help me with is that I know I can dance. I've never done ballroom or latin so I'd be a beginner like everyone else in that regard. I imagine the majority of the celebs who have had training are in the same boat, having trained in other styles and not for a good few years.”

Exactly. I did ballet, tap and contemporary dance until I was 15 and then sporadic contemporary dance for a good 10 years after that none of which would mean I'd a) be able to dance latin or ballroom and b) be able to do it now some 20 odd years later!

Apart from the slight advantage it may give in being able to memorise a routine, having had previous dance experience can turn out to be a disadvantage as Helen has found with her ballet feet and hips.

So long as I'm entertained when they get on the dance floor I couldn't care less if they were watlzing round Blackpool's Winter Gardens the year before

No but its likely actors and singers had them more recently, as in as teenagers and possibly even as adults.
