When is the Apple Upgrade Program launching in the UK?

Is this article wrong when it says Apple will launch the Upgrade Program in, "the United States and 11 other key markets including China"?

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/...0RA1HN20150910

Does anybody have any extra information on this?

I am itching to get my hands on a Iphone 6S, but don't want to get a locked handset through a network, and am already in a 12 month sim only contract.

Many thanks.

Its bound to come to the UK at some point, they know the well of customers as beginning to dry, hence this upgrade program. UK is Apple's most important market in Europe, given the similarities between UK and US. I suspect it will happen when Apple has rolled out the new iPhone to more territories.

Apple sell more phones in Germany and France than they do in the UK.

Thanks for the replies.

UK is Europe's biggest iPhone market:

The UK is basically the second market that a technology company will target so it will come to us ASAP, I'd say early next year.

Generally same language as USA with higher population (64m) than Canada (35m), Australia (23m) or NZ (4m), and no dual-language legal issues (French Canadian) - tends to help.

Given the fact the iPhone 6S has been out for nearly a month I'd say the Apple Upgrade Program will likely be launched in the UK with the iPhone 7 in 2016.

Pretty sure without even checking that the UK is Apple's biggest market in Europe.

Their market share in those countries is nearly half what it is in the UK.

I am trying to recall what Tim Cook said EXACTLY at the iPhone 6S launch (without going back to the archived event!). I thought he only said that the Upgrade Program would launch "this Fall" in the USA.

I don't think he even mentioned the other "10 key markets" - but I would be very suprised if the UK is not one of them!

He didn't mention any other territories by name, although he did say it would rollout internationally at some point. As I said earlier, UK is Apple's most important market in Europe, the market trends are also very similar to that of our American cousins. As Gigabit said, UK is usually the second country a Technology company will rollout new products to.

I think it will come to the UK sooner than other territories, there is a still a keen thirst for Apple products in this country, I have no doubt this "upgrade program" will help solidify its status. Although some of us whinge about how crap the iPhone is next x android device, they are still a trusted brand and people still want to buy their phones. I should say the mobile market in the US and Europe is now reaching saturation point, basically being much of a muchness. As this wears on few people are going to see the need of changing their phones after 2 years......now that we have Apple breaking precedent and supporting a 4 year old with the latest iOS, they are giving folk even less of a reason to buy new from them......admittedly Android makers could learn a lot from that.

I bet the pricing will be horrendous. Just divide the cost of a new phone by 12 (or 24 or 36) and put it aside each month.

Take the price of the iPhone you'd like. Add the cost of Apple Care +. Devide by 24 to get the monthly cost. That's how it works in the US and I'd expect it to be similar here.

Has anyone heard any updates regarding the iPhone upgrade program in the UK?

It's bound to happen as soon as I upgrade, it usually happens to me L🙃L

Unless they Apple are tied up in som deal with the carriers?

I had a 12 month contract with O2 several years ago, yes I paid more and got less bundled in, but it suited me, so could get the new iPhone. Only lasted one year and then they stopped. 😠

It will either launch in March when the supposed iPhone 5se is announced or alongside the iPhone 7 in September. That way, initial customers are on a set upgrade cycle rather than part way through a year and have to wait for the next upgrade cycle and so on.

Honestly I wouldn't mind this I'm on SIM Only plan and with EE and would never move to a 24 month plan again. My current plan is excellent and would be shocked if I'm forced off it anytime soon.

They sort of did this with PayPal over Christmas. You could pay the phone cost off by month with no interest, for a year, so iPhone cost / 12.

That's not the same thing, that is a trade in your old model get money towards new model.

The Upgrade Program information is here, and its USA only at the moment. I think Apple has a bank funding it (ha ha, the bank logo Citizens One seems to be the same as the UK RBS Group, can't be any connection, surely!)

Yep. Owned by RBS from 1988 until very recently.

This is an old post from this thread I've dug up but I thought I'd weigh in on that with the stats in a comparable period Apple sold 34.1m devices in the UK, 16.8m in France and 13.2m in Germany.

From my now rather limited knowledge of Germany they don't do Apple as much there. In fact from what I've seen they don't have the smartphone culture like we do as much, except in the University student demographic. Saw a lot more people calling on them than doing anything else last time I was there. Visiting people I know there as well their kids didn't seem to have smartphones as much and certainly no contracts only prepaid on stuff like Aldi-Mobile or congstar.

Why would anyone in the UK bother going to a network provider or the iPhone Upgrade program, when you can buy an iPhone on a 27 months interest free credit card, without the inconvenience of a network tie in?

1 - Not everyone can get an interest free credit card. Generally you have to have a pretty good credit rating to get one.
You have to have a pretty poor credit rating to get refused to a handset contract with a network.

2 - Some networks give specific perks to handset contract customers.
