What kind of purge were you thinking of OP? I am thinking of "Night Of The Long Hair Slides" but I hear high concentrations of fake tan spray and glitter work eventually.

It was maybe things like not doing a single heel lead in her Waltz that could have been part of the problem.

Mark Cavendish (top of my celeb wish list) competed in Latin and ballroom as a young lad before focus on the cycling.

I like watching those who have had dance training. They may not have had specific ballroom or latin training but at least they have some sense of rhythm and how to move. It would be unwatchable with everyone at the level zero.

It's pretty much unwatchable now, for me, and I'm only looking at dances worth suffering the appalling camera work.

Watching Jay from last night was a shear joy, it was just about impossible to tell, in that dance, which one of them was the pro.

I loved Natalie, and didn't give a stuff about her previous. One of my biggest Strictly regrets is that we never got to see her jive on the actual show and that she had to dance the rest of the series with a gammy back.

Sorry I don't remember that far back. I remember her Cha Cha Cha though. All I remember was she got so much stick and James always argued on her behalf. So it could be when she didn't do a single heel lead in her waltz, James piped up and argued with the judges.

I don't remember most of the insults about her on here focusing on heel leads to be honest...

I agree. I actually served a ban sticking up for her on here.

Any news on the Natalie to Jay training ratio ?

I remember it well. It was totally undeserved.

I think with Denise, it was more the fact she had had a high profile career dancing on stage before Strictly, there were numerous articles where she bigged up how she could dance in heels and her training - yet her Strictly storyline condensed it all down to 'sat on a chair' which was seen as just a tad disingenuous, maybe?

Strictly did seem to learn from that little episode.

Its far more enjoyable to watch someone who has an ability to learn it quickly and wow us
Take X Factor or BGT , would we enjoy the out if tune singers or vote for them ? Or vote for a juggler who keeps dropping the knives ?
No we go for the Paul Potts and Diversety who obviousely didnt wake up one morning and sing Nessen Dorma with no previous training

Watching Jay is a joy , I am not fussed if he hopped around a stage doing routines before or had a few years of learning dance skills
I would switch off after a few weeks of Carol and Iwan and Kirsty doing poor dances and showing little improvement

Comedians are very risky. Rick Tomlinson danced ballroom for a few years (or is he more an actor?) and Tim Vine has actually been in the same studio as a Strictly pro now.

Surely the Royals have had some sneaky ballroom lessons in the privacy of Buckingham Palace to prepare for official functions? So I wouldn't trust Prince Harry to declare his credentials.

Anyone who has got married may have had sneaky first dance lessons. So best to keep to single people, to stay on the safe side.

I supported Natalie too and I support Jay because basically I like to see good dancing. Jay is getting a lot of flack for his previous training - you've only got to look on the forum and I imagine twitter is awash with it. Also Natalie must have been popular because she got to the final and I don't remember (correct me if I am wrong) that that she was in a dance off so she must have been getting the votes. I don't think there is any difference between the treatment of Natalie and Jay. They were/are a joy to watch.

Great OP. All this Ringer stuff is pants. I want to see good dancing, not watch a succession of no-hopers plod around the floor. Last night was FAB precisely because we had a few good dancers. Long may it continue.

It would be awful to have a series with no ringers though. Mark Ramprakash, Colin Jackson, Zoe Ball, Louis Smith, Susanna Reid, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Denise Lewis, Gethin Jones, Austin Healey, Harry Judd, Abbey Clancy, Jade Johnson...you'd barely get through an episode of that crap wouldn't you?

I think thats probably what put me off them too. As a non dancer their routines came over as all style and no substance and were lacking in heart and emotion.

I'm blaming Artem.

I agree with almost all of your points but I do think (I could be wrong) that the comments re Natalie were far nastier than those about Jay so far.

I don't think the 'ringer' thing really exists with the average viewer. Who people like and vote for is more complicated than that. Its a combination of ability, improvement, likability, partnership chemistry etc.

If you engage with those things with a certain contestant then the ringer status is irrelevant as people justify it or excuse it. If you don't engage then previous experience becomes an issue as it is seen as competition for the couple/s you do like and by default becomes a stick a beat them with.

I'm betting that most of the FMs complaining about Jay this year have previously supported someone else with experience.
