I hate the exaggerated open-mouthed shocked/surprised look that dancers often wear for some reason, but Jay's face is just blank. He dances the steps well, but otherwise he conveys nothing at all.

The premise of the film scene they were referencing makes it difficult for me to judge whether he was performing or just lucky that his nonchalance fitted the theme. I guess we have to wait for other dances. You need to check out the eye interaction between them though - this is no Louis/Flavia partnership!!

I must be the only person on the planet never to have seen Pulp Fiction, I don't even know the plot. But my assumption was that the concept of Jay and Aliona's dance was that in the film Travolta takes part in a dance or a dance competition somewhat reluctantly. So I assumed that Jay's performance face was to portray ennui and slight distain.”

I haven't seen it either.

Jay seems to be expressionless at all times - while dancing, while being critiqued, while being interviewed, while standing around. The lights are on but nobody's home.

But seriously, agree with that. It doesn't have to be Karen Hardy levels of gurning but some facial expression wouldn't be so bad. He looks permanently lost and a bit scared.”

BIB: Maybe that's what I find endearing about him In addition to the fact that his dancing is a joy to watch

His expressions are fine as they are, and very natural. I hope he doesn't get pressurised into performing with false, cheesy, gurning grins.

All kinds of levels of interaction which may or may not be relevant to real life going on here! ”

Brilliant. This space (Jay's face) is left blank for you to write your own message. We get to spin our own narrative or story. I think that is worth an extra point. Give him 11!
