... has been performed quite well by Dave Arch and his orchestra so far this year. None of the singers have grated my ears, which is a change for the better, and a lot of the music has been delivered with a bit of panache.

Yes.

But there continues to be a mix of good, bad and terrible musical choices/assignments.

I have ridiculous amounts of respect for the band. They play incredibly difficult pieces of music and on very limited rehearsal time, not to mention some weeks they have upwards of 15 pieces of incredibly varied music styles. That takes a lot of talent.

As a fellow musician I just bow down before them in homage.

I think they always do a good job. I will winge for Great Britain on the choice of numbers vis a vis the dance styles but I would never knock the band.

Sometimes the singers don't sound like the original, although often they do and I forget it is a cover performance. Sometimes they don't have quite the range to make it to the high notes (or whatever) so effortlessly as the original artist did but hey ho I wonder if the original artists could manage the versatility and range of so many numbers from different styles and eras. I think the band are marvellous.

Oh and...Where's Trev?

I thought they were particularly good in Jay & Aliona's jive & it really added to the performance.

You just get the silhouette of trev now - totally unfair! Was it him playing the guitar in the second half of Jay and Aliona's jive? It was really good!

Katies jive to Pretty Woman was hopeless I felt sorry for her as it was a silly piece of music to put to a jive, and I think that put her off badly..

I can't remember which song, but one of the male singers struggled on the high notes of one. Professional musicians of the standard of Dave Arch's band can play any tune in any key.
I can only suggest the particular singer chose a key, or was happy to sing in the one chosen by Dave Arch, but it was a bit beyond his abilities.
Some good "ballroom tunes," last night but some seemingly chosen for the benefit of the "the X-Factor deserters."

The band is brilliant but we did have a few high note issues last night with the singer not quite reaching.
Tough call though .. they have to cover such a wide range of songs so it's no surprise that they sometimes fall short.
Often I expect the celeb to stop mid dance .. look at the singer and yell WTF?!!!! But then, the singers could well do the same .. must be disheartening to be singing your heart out to the accompanying stomps of some old duffer in the midst of a comedy routine.
They do a grand job all things considered.

'Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel' was the main song they struggled with last night.

likewise. the band are superb and the singers generally do a good job, have never understood why some of the critics seem to expect karaoke in the exact manner of the original.

I feel exactly the same. Dave Arch is a brilliant musician and the band is excellent. The music choices and the singers are different issues, and Dave does not make those choices.

I agree, there has been a lot of unwarranted criticism and I think they do a great job. Live singers and band are preferable to pre recorded stuff

The music for Jay and Aliona's jive was fantastic, especially the trumpet work.

Indeed and to be fair, few men can manage that unless someone has a vice like grip on their testicles at strategic moments.
