Unsurpassed number 1s
Multimedia81

The idea of this thread is to name number 1s that you did not just like, but which you feel have never been surpassed by any subsequent number 1.

You may feel that your favourite song from a year in particular was a number 1. This could be a good start provided you doubt you have liked any subsequent number 1 as much.

I shall start with a chain, helped by the fact that my official all-time favourite song was a number 1.

1. Beach Boys:- Do It Again (1968)
2. Tasmin Archer:- Sleeping Satellite (1992)
3. Spice Girls:- Who Do You Think You Are? (1997)
4. LeAnn Rimes:- Can't Fight the Moonlight (2000)
5. S Club 7:- Don't Stop Moving (2001)

If I go further down the chain, the songs would not have even featured in my to 20 of the Decade so I shall leave it here, for now at least....

Hope I've understood the concept of this thread.

1. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black (1967)*
2. Eternal feat. Bebe Winans - I Wanna Be The Only One (1997)
3. Cher - Believe (1998)
4. Oasis - The Importance Of Being Idle (2005)
5. Leona Lewis - Run (2008)/Lady Gaga & Beyonce - Telephone (2010)**

*yes, I think this is their best single and nothing they released after bettered this song.

**yes, I copped out and decided to include a joint 5th place.

Thank you Hitstastic. Your understanding of my chain is indeed hitstastic!!

Even if any of you only have 1 song or limited examples, these will be interesting too.

Oh yes Hitstastic, and I've seen your profile and noticed you were born in 1981. That was my favourite contemporary year for music, it was late that year when I first heard Do It Again, and was the inspiration behind the use of 81 in my username! Mind you, if anyone underestimates my age as a result, that's a bonus!

I have seen some of your posts in the Rare 60s Thread Johnny. Do you have any special favourite number 1 from then or subsequently that you feel has never been surpassed?

Well, "Paint It Black" is certainly one of my favourites from 1966 (not 1967!), a year which had some of the greatest number ones of that decade:-

"Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys
"Reach Out I'll Be There" by the Four Tops
"Out Of Time" by Chris Farlowe
"All Or Nothing" by the Small Faces
"The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker Brothers
"Keep On Running" By The Spencer Davis Group
"Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" by Dusty Springfield
"Sunny Afternoon" by the Kinks

the list goes on and on.

So many classic no. 1's in just ONE year!

No worries Hitstastic.

Online Discography can sometimes be very inaccurate. For chart positions of singles and the years those singles were hits use the website www.everyhit.com. It's very informative.
