I know lots of people didn't like Dens return in 2003 but the scenes were Sharon finds out he's alive were far superior than Ian and Kathy's this week.

Sharon's reaction to Den was realistic and believable but Ian's reaction was ''Oh your alive lets have a cup of tea''

Seriously it was horrible and it came across as quite lazy writing.
Kathy had returned from the dead and Ian even flew out to her funeral so his reaction should've been more dramatic than it was.

The Dirty Den return was a blow out, but his actual return week was amazing, way way better than Kathy s return, but then I did have a feeling it would be a let down.

Den and Sharon but that's my favourite ever soap moment so it would be hard to beat for me.

Lost all faith in the show since this pathetic return.
Truly sad

On one hand, from a character point of view I think Ian's response to Kathy giving everything he's gone through and how much he misses her was true and how he would respond. A lot of posters have been saying how they think someone would respond without looking at the character of Ian. And Ian's completely different to Sharon, is in a different point in his life than when Sharon met Den and so his response would be different. Just like Ben's response to Kathy is different to Ian's.

The only thing I'd compare would be production values, there was an esoteric, mysterious atmosphere that captivated the scenes leading up to and after Dens return with Sharon, Dennis and Vicki. Two much focus on the Carters or other storylines, making Ian go to a hospital - a 'public' place with lots of people around, those things lost focus on Ian and Kathy. If it was on the square, in the Beale house or at the back of his restaurant it would have had more dramatic potential from a production value point of view.

What helped was it was a week dedicated to the story. Ian and Kathy had to share the screen with the Elaine/Babe silly toyboy story.

DTC is happy to have Carter only episodes so why couldn't he have had a Beale only episode?!

I can't imagine there are many people who would favour the Kathy episodes over the Den episodes. The week where Den came back was EastEnders firing on all cylinders. Sadly Kathy's comeback week was half hearted, lazy and surrounded by crap like Babegate. For him being such a huge fan I'm genuinely surprised DTC put such little effort into Kathy's reunion with Ian. They deserved at least one episode dedicated solely to their reunion. It seems DTC can't leave the Carters out of anything. They always have to be there even if they're out of place.

The Carter intrusion into Ian and Kathy's reunion episode was annoying, but at least they haven't actually been involved in the storyline at all. DTC has shown remarkable restraint in this respect.

I had nightmares about Mick and Shirl discovering Kaffy and bringing her back to Walford

Give it time

What was the point of Tracy telling Mick about Kathy? Now that Ian knows it seems like a pointless scene. We can add it to the list of pointless Mick scenes that includes his cringey encounter with Peggy and his random fondling of Tanya in the caff It's like no storyline can happen unless Mick is informed.

The Peggy/Mick scene was pure cringe. I wanted an asteroid to hit the Vic at that precise moment and wipe them both out.

I must admit I did cringe at Mick saying 'get outta my pub.'

It wasn't well acted too. You could tell Danny was trying too hard not to laugh

You could. It was purely for the novelty of it. I think.

The scene was an embarrassment. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for taking part in it. Pure cringe on every level. When will DTC realise not everyone is in love with Danny Bloody Dyer? Every time Peggy comes back it's less Peggy and more Barbara Windsor.

Totally agree. It just felt like a normal set of episodes. Zero tension or atmosphere at all. Utterly underwhelming.

Den and Sharon obviously.

Kathy's return didn't work on paper and hasn't worked on screen either.

Den and Sharon hands down for me! This Kathy return has been a big disappointment. I know it's a soap so I have to suspend belief but, when Kathy was saying don't call the ambulance because the police will come I was disgusted. Her son (who was already unwell) was laying in the road and all she could think about was herself. I don't care how controlling Gavin is; that was inexcusable imho.

Damn I wish Den and Angie were still around. I like Kathy but she's poor substitute for them.

I love Kathy, but I really do miss the Watts so much. EastEnders' greatest family by far.

A hilarious scene from their heyday: http://youtu.be/1_X8Bu7y-5E

That was classic but at Den slapping Sharon. The whole scene was still too funny

They certainly wouldn't. Still such a great scene though, nobody did melodrama like the Watts.

The way Angie screams when Den hits her back

That's why I loved em.
Ultimately they all destroyed each other. Damn I'm in the mood for a Filiman essay but he's probably given up on the show in disgust.

I'm watching the Watts video clips on YouTube and Daily Motion. The Carters are never going to be iconic like the Watts
