Duck vs chicken eggs

I've been thinking of experimenting with duck eggs. What are the major differences do you think? I'm inclined to think that duck eggs taste better but is that true?

Not for me. I tried them once and they taste very similar to chicken eggs but have a sour note to the flavour. They also sort of taste 'concentrated' compared to chicken eggs.

They weren't horrible, but I paid a premium and weren't nice enough to ever buy again. I realised when I ate them why chicken eggs are basically the human race's default choice of egg to eat - They taste the nicest for the price!

That said, it never occurred to me to try them in cooking, like rice and sponge cakes. But I'm happy with chicken eggs.

I'm not really a fan of eggs, I never really choose to have them other than in omelet form but a while ago a dish I had on a taster menu in a nice restaurant had a poached ducks egg yolk and it was lovely. They brought out a bowl with the yolk and a piece of salt cod in it and then poured a potato and garlic soup around it. It was stunning. I'm not a huge fan of soup either so had this been on a regular menu I would have never picked it, that's one of the reasons I love taster menus because you get given things you'd probably never choose.

I love duck eggs, you get much more yolk so they're richer in taste. If you're feeling really adventurous, try a century duck egg.

I saw one of those on Through The Keyhole of all things. I would like to try one although I suspect I wouldn't like it.

I read about them recently, they don't look very appetising! But I'd probably give it a go...

Fresh duck eggs are amazing, especially when baking cakes.

They're richer than hen eggs, and make beautiful omelettes or frittata, but be aware with goose eggs, they're far too oily to make omelettes.

If you have a farm locally, get them from there, they're guaranteed to be fresh, and a lot cheaper, I pay £5 for a tray of 30.

I tried a hardboiled duck's egg once.

It was rubbery and left a bitter taste.
I'd stick to locally sourced free range hens' eggs - there's a reason why they are more popular imo,

Yes I've had them lots. It's a strong flavour, more like a strong cheese than anything else. If your giving them a go, just start out using a little bit to flavour rice or even try a little sliver on a rice cracker, rather than eat a whole chunk.
