Sorry for the new thread but it's a pretty specific question.

I have been using Apple Pay without issue for several months. I'm over in America at the moment and just tried to use it at a retailer that accepts it, only to get a 'payment not completed' message on my screen. Am I supposed to be able to use it in the USA, or can UK cards only be used in the UK? If it's the latter, it seems annoyingly limited as a payment system.

Does your card work as standard contactless in the States?

I'm not sure - I haven't tried to use it. It's a Visa Debit card so will work, but maybe the contactless function is restricted to the UK. I just thought Apple Pay would be universal so I'm a bit disappointed.

Apple Pay is universal but will only be able to perform what the same card is able to do, or may even be a restriction by your bank.

Without researching it that was my hunch, contactless probably won't work so I would presume ApplePay won't either, if the bank doesn't want (or can't support) international contactless the same restriction would apply to ApplePay.

It is processed as Contactless by the majority of retailers - I believe that any retailer truly using Applepay directly is not limited to the contactless £30 limit.

So the question does seem to involve the answer to "can UK contactless be used internationally?"

The answer to that is Yes.

The US was quick to adopt the older "MSD" (Magnetic Stripe Data) contactless system which is pretty low tech (it basically just transmits the same data that's on the Magnetic Stripe of the card to the card reader).

The UK (and most of Europe) uses a newer standard which is an extension of the EMV technology used by Chip and PIN, where the chip plays a more active role in the processing of the transaction.

Generally cards issued in the UK support both EMV and MSD, while cards issued in the US only support MSD.

But I suppose that if you went to a store in the US that only supported MSD and your card doesn't support MSD, you might have a problem with Apple Pay...

It was probably just the bank rejecting the card because you were trying to use it abroad.

I had my card rejected by Barclays, got a text two minutes later, replied and tried again and it worked okay.

Unless you told the bank you were going that's probably what it was and would have occurred regardless of Apple Pay/Contactless/Chip and Pin

I don't know about this. The message I got was on the screen of the phone. I can't remember the exact message but it refused to even try to complete the transaction. It wasn't rejected at the payment authorisation stage, but as soon as I'd used Touch ID.

I used my UK iPhone with a UK debit card at a Panera in the US with Apple Pay and it worked fine, so yes, international transactions should work.

As someone else said, it's possible your card provider declined the transaction because you're abroad. Give them a call.

^^

Thanks. I'll try to use the card itself for a payment today and see what happens. If it doesn't go through, I'll call the bank.

Yeah I had that in France.
Capital One card was blocked automatically when I got there.
I called them up and they unblocked it for me.
Apparently you should as a matter of course ring your card providers (of the cards you are going to use abroad) and tell them where you are going and for how long before you go.

The automatic security software at their end then expects you to be there and doesn't block you.

I thought everyone knew that? I always ring my bank beforehand to say where I am going and how long for. Basic fraud protection.

One credit card company I rang said they don't even do those notes on file anymore and it's not necessary. Another one took a note of it. I didn't really intend to use my Visa Debit but was just curious to see if Apple Pay worked. I've used it countless times in Europe without having to tell them first, though.
