My new kitten Houdini is a little on the skinny side (she was removed from mother far too young) she's not dangerously so but she is on the cusp of it and is VERY active so burns up a lot of calories. Also yesterday she wasn't well which didn't help. (She's brighter today and eating albeit smaller potions) So I'm looking for food suggestions that have a high calorie content.

I'dve thought something solidly protein like chicken, tuna or mackerel. You could also try giving your vet a call.

Thanks. I bought some chicken. I also looked online and I found kitten formula at reasonable price on Amazon that can be used as a supplement so I've ordered some of that. To get her to eat I've been mixing the chicken in some water and blending it down then feeding her with a Pipette as she is really not eating much.

Since then though she hasn't made any improvements and I'm getting a little worried as she has a bit of diarrhoea and is not as manic as she normally is.
I would have taken her to the vet yesterday but just don't have enough money. So I'm doing the feeding and going straight to the vets Tuesday when I can afford the fees. (I have £5 to my name and everyone else I know is in the same boat. I can't register her with the PDSA as they only only one pet and my other cat Yoshi is already listed)

I don't wish to sound harsh, but if you can't afford the vet bills then you can't keep the cat. Hopefully she'll pull through this, but there will always be medical expenses - flea treatments and annual jabs if nothing else.
Contact Cats Protection or another local charity to see if they can take her on.

I can afford it. It's just this is a bad month right now and I spent lots of money already on flea treatment and wormer and kitten food and a cat litter tray and cat litter and toys and a collar and a harness and was planning to taker her to the vets next tuesday to start her on her shots and have her spayed at the end of the November.

She also wasn't planned. She was abandoned.

I started my siamese kittens on royal canine kitten food. They are now ten months and still like it.

Find a food with a high meat/fish content, don't feed them any mainstream crap like Whiskas or Felix, it's about 4% meat/fish and the rest of it is basically crap they don't need.

Feline Fayre, natures menu, encore, Lily's kitchen, to name but a few. Natures menu and Lily's kitchen make kitten food specifically and that has a higher fat content to it as well.

Cheers for that. I think I've seen a couple of those names about. I have just enough to be able to get some to last until Tuesday.
On a plus side she's starting to show some interest in food again. Too early to tell if she's on the mend but she does seem to be a little more like her talky self so far.

I totally understand the money situation, some months are harder than others - it sounds like you are doing everything that you can so hopefully the little one will put on some weight soon

It's only because I got my PIP result through that I took her on. I've been keen for a new cat (would also have loved a dog but wouldn't be fair on a dog as much as I'm looking for work) for some time but put it off because of money. It just sucks that everything happened in the one month before my first PIP payment. I've already spent a good portion on her already and I've only had her about 4 weeks. (yet she already feels very permanent already)

I already have some news on Houdini as well. It seems she has perked up somewhat over night. She's still not eating as I would like but she's definitely showing signs of interest in food now and her stomach shows. (pacing food a bit more as I don't want to over feed her and make her sick again) She even got growly and swatted at me when I was shredding up some cooked beef into tiny portions earlier for her. And she was a little down too but she's perked up there a bit and is making her usual playful chirping and pestering my big Cat when the last couple of days she was sleeping a lot.

Still taking her to the vet though. Get their opinion and see if she is well enough to get started on her injections.
But overall I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think she might have snuck a taste of my chinese curry when I was busy and caused herself a tummy upset.

It's more than 4%, but the named ingredient (rabbit, chicken, whatever) has to be at least 4%. However I agree it's not a good food.

Look on zooplus, they have lots of quality grain-free wet cat foods, hopefully you can find some she likes. Some types come in mixed packs of 200g tins, free delivery if you spend £29 or more.

I would also give her some raw beef or lamb mince - the high-fat ones - but no more than 20% of her diet as it's not balanced.

Go for specialist wet kitten food from one of the better brands. Kitten food already has more fat and protein content than ordinary cat food. Food for senior cats has less again as they assume the cat is less active.

Some high protein tinned fish like salmon would be good occasionally.

Also get a good dry food and leave that out for the cat all the time.

I wouldn't worry too much. As long as the kitten is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed he's fine. Sounds like he has an owner that'll turn him into a fine cat.

Good news is I just checked my bank balance and my PIP money is in so she's due to the vets today at 6.15 I'll see about asking for about food that will help

well Update as I'm back from vets. Vet thinks it might be because of change in food or stress that has gradually caused a build up of bacteria in her gut. (I'm her fourth home)

I'm to keep her on bland food such as white fish and chicken and rice and she is on a weeks course of antibiotics.

As I write this she is munching on some kitten biscuits

New update as well things are looking even better

We have mostly solid poop now and a healthy appetite and a very hyper kitten again. Still keeping a close eye on her in case of relapse and completing antibiotics course but she seems to be pretty much herself again.
I tried chicken and rice and white fish and rice but she wasn't having the rice thing. She'll eat the chicken on it's own though and is getting through around two sachet of wet food and as much biscuits as she wants. Also been giving her one small bowl of kitten supplement milk which she loves. She has a round full tummy

My other cat is not amused at super happy playful kitten being back. He's Mr Grumpy right now. But I'm making up for it with extra dreamies and cuddles for him as well.
