I am trying my best to free up internal storage, have done the usual stuff (e.g. moved everything to SD card) but it is not enough.

I noticed that the "miscellaneous files" are reporting as being 617 MB, but when I look in there there is a WhatsApp file which is apparently 1.05 GB (under Application Manager, WhatsApp only reports using 53 MB).

And ideas why the discrepancy? And could it be safe to delete the file?

TIA

The extra on WhatsApp will probably be cache ? Or include shared photos/videos etc ?

Lots of apps are very bad at clearing cache. I had an appointment that seemed to be replicating all my contacts (sync.me) and the cache ended up huge. With that it was simply a case of clearing the cache and it redownloaded all my contacts correctly. If you use "play music" that will often build upnquite a large cache too. Do you auto backup photos etc to the cloud ? Using Google photos and cloud storage means you can clear photos physically from your handset without losing them (and they remain accessible on demand).

Back to WhatsApp though, if you delete the file the worst that's likely to happen is you lose your conversation history.

Have you tried a cleaner on it?

Clean Master seems to be a good one
