IRRC that was how it was in the early series. I think it works better if the idea is to see SCD as a competitve endeavour. Less well from a light entertainment point of view.

That's the way Strictly used to be, I can't remember which year they changed it. The first week used to be either a waltz or a chachacha. I much preferred it that way because it was easier to compare like with like.

EDIT: I see An Thropologist got there before me!

I prefer what they did in earlier series when they had a 1 ballroom dance and 1 Latin dance. I liked this because it was good to compare the celebs and see who was really good. It also makes the competition more interesting the old way they used to the dances.

I miss this I much prefer that than what they do now where they all nearly do different dances.

Series 8 for week 5 onwards, series 9 for week 3 onwards, series 10 for week 2 onwards and series 11 for more than two choices of dance each week from the beginning.

It helps in comparing routines, but it did get a bit repetitive. I think they could keep it down to a slightly smaller number of dances to begin with, say one dance per two/three couples depending on how many are left in and whether it is an even or odd number left.

thats how it used to be in the early series - half did a latin dance, half did a ballroom dance

much easier IMO for the public to see any progression and for the judges to mark the dance accordingly to ability

I think it works better now. I don't want to sit through 8 rumbas in one go. It was alright in the earlier series, because you had small casts and/or split weeks, but even with props and gimmickry to keep things varied, if we landed on a week where we had two dances I'm not really interested in (and cha cha/waltz would be a prime example) it'd make the early weeks drag on more than they already do.

Also at this point I've watched the show since the beginning, I've seen some of these genres done 100+ times, I don't need a dance to be happening 15 minutes apart from one of the same type to tell how I think it fits in scorewise overall.

You said what I wanted to but far more articulately. The first couple of series if you weren't ballroom dancers, you had no idea what was brilliant and what was ok. Now we're all so familiar with these dances I can quote rise and fall, heel leads, straight leg for cha cha, samba bounce, paso shaping along with the best of them and I'd put myself in the casual viewer category, I have no great love of ballroom dancing i

Last week's show was 2 hours long, I'd have been catatonic if they'd only danced the foxtrot or the jive for example.

Agree with this - it was ok in earlier series with less couples but with so many now, the variety is better.

Also there is another consideration. It's a more attarctive proposition for a duffer who knows they are only going to last 2 to 5 weeks to sign up for strictly when they can learn fun/crowd pleasing dances and not just the cha cha and the Waltz. Jeremy doing the AS and Charleston comes to mind, or Aisnley the Tango and Salsa.

(Those flashy dances gives them a chance of making an impression and surviving. And showing that you are a good sport.)

When the show started they used just one ballroom and one Latin dance (ie everyone would be doing either a waltz or a cha), which worked ok then, but there were far less couples. To do that now, with 15 couples would probably get a bit boring. Imagine a week where there were 6 couples murdering the rumba, and the other 6 attempting a foxtrot. There'd probably be mass switch off!! Having a variety of dances each week might not seem fair, but it is probably more entertaining.
