Note - Apologies if a similar thread has been made in the past (I'd imagine one has).

The word "journey" is thrown out often, both in and out of this forum in relation to Strictly and other reality programmes. I have to admit it's pretty cool watching somebody start out pretty dire, and end up delivering a decent performance later on.

Who, in your opinion, made the largest improvement during their time in Strictly?

Well, Lisa Snowdon went from 22/40 to 35/40 in the space of 3 dances, but the 22 was a Salsa and the 35 an American Smooth - very different - so that doesn't say too much. However, she did later get a 40/40 for a Cha-Cha-Cha in the final, which considering she started her competition with a 22 for another party Latin shows some serious improvement in Latin at least.

Not sure about who I think would be the most improved in Strictly history, but I would quite like to see Lauren Goodger give Strictly a go because I think she regreated signing up for Dancing On Ice because she feared the ice to much and I feel Strictly would be a good chance for her to give another similar show a chance, I have strated a thread about her after watching Lauren on Who's Doing The Dishes.

Yes, that's true!

I have to say, Michael Vaughn sticks out in my mind after that atrocious jive in early weeks, then progressing to that fairly memorable (for the right reasons) Argentine tango later on in his series.

Agreed. I thought he was going to be gimmicky throughout the entire series after that first Cha Cha, but I ended up liking him as time went on. His samba was definitely a turning point, and although it wasn't perfect, it was really enjoyable and you could see how much work into it.

Also, despite not being full of content, I quite liked his contemporary rumba.

Matt Dawson got 19 wk1 and 38 in the final.
Gethin went from 22 in wk1 to 39 in wk9.
And Chris Hollins never got more than 30 until week 8.

Michael Vaughan'd be my shout too - from 15/40 in week two, to being one vote away from leaving in week three, to getting 35/40 four weeks later.

Not sure who has made the most improvement over the course of a series but I wonder if Anita is one of the best totally untrained, ;earning from scratch celebrity.

I know she was pretty good from the very first week but is she the best the show has had who has had NO dance training/background at all?

I really enjoyed Matt Dawson and Lilia - gosh I miss Lilia! she really did do wonders with him - getting him an acting coach was the best thing she could ever have done to bring him out of his shell

Julian Clary went from being a complete nervous wreck to an Officer and a Gentleman in the final. I still have him down as the first 'journey' contestant

Noooooo... don't do that to yourself. You'll be sooooo disappointed when you find out she once sat on a chair in her kitchen whilst "All That Jazz" was playing on the radio.

Mine would be Michael Vaughan too but an honourable mention to Dani Harmer who started out with 21 and rose to 36 six weeks later and never got less than 34 from there on.

Are stage-school alumni excluded from this then?

Darren Gough only scored 19 points in week one (with a score of 3 from Craig), yet went on to win series 3, scoring 36 twice in the final.

Jeremy scored 19 in week one this year. It's hard to see a similar end result for him.

Whilst Darren became good he was unstoppable, he was an impenetrable force.

agree with those who mentioned matt dawson.

the show was rather dominated by ramprakash and that noisy pro he danced with, but matt dawson was a class apart in that year, both for the improvement over the show and the level of quiet accomplishment he attained

Seeing Abbey Clancy shocking chacha in week 2 to seeing her dance her samba in week 11....that progress is the definition of " journey".
She's one of the biggest improvement that this show ever had IMO.
