with Janet recently celebrating her 7th US number one album and Madonna's last effort reaching number 2 i was wondering which of these you feel has the edge ? Artistically and commercially.

Madonna's album actually sold more copies even though debuting at #2 than Janet did at #1. Because in the week Madonna released there was more competition with the Empire soundtrack.
I don't think either of them because of their age is likely to have a huge hit again. But since the music business is about live tours now, Madonna has the edge because she is a much more interesting live performer. Her shows have amazing costumes, unique choreography and she changes arrangements of older songs.
Janet does a much more traditional less artistic show, which is basically her greatest hits with a few new songs with uninteresting costumes and similiar dance routines.
Madonna to me is far more interesting on a personal and artistic level. She is much more interesting and unique. Janet is way too guarded, rarely does interviews, I guess because of the way she grew up in the Jackson family. Although Madonna's last album entered at No.2 it still sold more copies than Janet,s. Madonna has had 8 No. Albums in the U..S. Janet has sold 26 million albums in the US. Madonna has sold over 60 million in the U.S.
The list goes on and on single sales, club chart No1s etc, etc, so commercially the question is answered by the facts. Worldwide Madonna has had far more commercial success.
Artistically is down to personal preference.
Janet was always going to find it harder due to being in the shadow of Michael as did all her other siblings. The odd family behaviours accusations of abuse, the entire family has been marred with accusations which at times has impacted on all their careers. Janet hasn't been consistent throughout her career artistically she has struggled with her own identity which has made her difficult to like at times. The family disputes have overshadowed her music and her persona. She has also had periods throughout her career were she has basically gone out of the public eye.
I can't really see any comparisons for a Janet v Madonna topic.

Not a fan of either, but Madonna unquestionably has bigger commercial and cultural clout than Janet.

You know what interests me most about this. That Superbowl incident killed Janet's career, she has never truly recovered yet Madonna managed to survive the whole sex era and came out of it stronger than ever.

Is this desperation to try and make out Janet has been affected because she is black. The reason she got such a hard time was because it was the Super Bowl which is the most watched programme in the US. And supposed to be a huge family event. Nothing to do with her colour if it had been MTV music awards hardly anyone would have blinked.
Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Kanye West, JayZ are all listed in the worlds biggest selling artists and guess what they are black. Janet's not been as commercially successful because her music hadn't been as popular as other artists nothing to do with her race.
Her career nosedived specifically in the U.S. Because she upset a lot of people with the Super Bowl incident. It was seen as a desperate attempt to try and kick start her career and a lot of people didn't buy the story of wardrobe malfunction.
I loved her early material in the 80's but nothing she has done since interests me, I think there have been far more creative and artistic black female singers.

I was expecting her to tour wearing a hijab. Anything less than a hijab is considered sexualised for a Muslim.
Madonna is the better popstar and entertainer, Janet is a better artist.
It's brilliant that both are still successful and I love their recent albums.

I thought people were criticizing it because they didn't like the costume and because she didn't have that many costume changes, not because it wasn't sexual enough.
