Paso Doble v Charleston
I'll preface this by stating that I have no dancing experience...
...however by my untutored eye, I have arrived at these conclusions. The Paso Doble seems to only ever be performed well with Spanish music. Tonight's rendition of a U2 song for this dance illustrated the point perfectly and I think there was probably nobody who could have produced a decent dance to go with that. It may well be the end for Kirsty & Brendan because their dance, although performed better than earlier dances, looked completely lacklustre. The Charleston - I used to have my doubts as to its suitability for inclusion in the dances performed in Strictly but I now genuinely see it as a watershed for a lot of the contestants. Jamelia did tonight as many do - and found herself able to perform a characterful dance and in doing so, gained confidence and pulled off a really good performance. The Charleston has been a turning point for a number of couples in Strictly and I think it works well for letting the couples leave behind a lot of the constraints of the Ballroom and Latin dances - and let their hair down a bit. So there.
