Jamelia's Charleston
Okay, so I've been re-watching the dances, and even as a rabid Katie & Anton fan...
...I felt Jamelia & Tristan should've been top? Her swivel was utterly fabulous, and it really was a "WOW" dance. I thought at least two 9s were deserved, but I've seen others on DS disagree and say it was overmarked. What's everyone's opinion? |

Fellow rabid Katie and Anton fan reporting in here too.
I think Jamelia and Katie were the strongest tonight. That said I still would've placed Jamelia slightly lower; the dance wasn't anywhere near as clean something she needs to work on. Problem was the sheer amount of couples scoring 32 points. I personally would've put Peter and Kellie behind Jamelia in points which would've made her Charleston have more of an impact on the leaderboard. |

I thought her Charleston was the best dance on the night, can't understand why people think she was overmarked?

Katie's VW got the right score (anywhere from 32-35 would've been fine), but it was a bit skippy, and I feel that was because Anton went "YOU WANT CONTENT?! I'LL GIVE YOU F***ING CONTENT.", and turned the difficulty dial up to 11.

Katie and Anton made their VW look simple, but it was full of content and very well danced. I saw Katie make two small blips, otherwise I couldn't fault it. The trouble with the VW is it looks easy, but it's a hard dance to do well. We rarely see a decent VW on the show any more, so a lot of people dismiss it as easy. In earlier series we'd see at least one celeb taking travel sickness tablets to get through their routine.
Jamelia's Charleston was brilliant. Also full of content and well danced. She had much better control this week, especially of her legs. You could see how hard she'd worked to pull off that performance and for me it was the best Charleston since Natalie Gunmede's. Very hard to choose between the two couples, but I love the VW so I'd place Katie and Anton above Jamelia and Tris.

Also remember she got the same score as Kellie got last week (for her Charleston). The main problem with the dance being that she was a bit heavy with her legs on the floor, something that shouldn't be the case with a Charleston. |

Loved the look on Tristan's face - nearly as pleased as Anton!

Jamelia's Charleston was good but, as with all her dances, for me anyway, she "sits" on her legs which makes them look too bent all the time and, while that suits this particular dance, it still means she's not getting the extension from the hips down through the leg which makes it look clean.
Her swivel action, on the other hand, was amonst the best I've seen on the show and she definitely had a Josephine Baker style to sections of the dance which were completely recognisable. If she'd straighten her knees in between thebending, even in a Charleston, her central core would look like it was being pulled through the steps even more and stop her looking so heavy on the dance floor as she's not actually. |

I just think, as you say, her Charleston was a dance that suited her and her "sitting" on her legs (although is that making it too "swing" rather than Charleston?).

I can see that, definitely.

Loved it, I know she isn't a fan fave but I find her ok personality wise and she could definitely be the journey contestant this year. Vast improvement from her.

I've only seen it once but I thought she went wrong at the end and then was surprised the comments/marks didn't reflect that. Maybe I was wrong.

I thought she danced it good, it just didn't have the WOW for me, not sure why, I preferred Kellie's last week

It was my favourite dance of the night.
I accept from those in the know thstKatie and Anton were better technically. But I thought Jamelia was fab and really shined. |

Who should have been top amongst the three women contestants is, I think, a matter of taste. I think Kellie's foxtrot was as good as Katie's VW but I do not like the foxtrot very much and did not like Kellie's dance either. So Katie's VW wins out for me between those two. I do not think there is much to choose between Katie and Jamelia except Katie is the tidier and more elegant of the two so seems better. I preferred Jamelia's dance and there were so many different steps packed into it. But I am not in a position to comment on technicality and if she demonstrated more skill than Katie.
Peter's tango was not as good as Kellie or Jamelia's dance and I would rate him below Helen. |

It was very close between Jamelia and Katie last night. Both were great but I'd edge with Katie simply because I prefer the VW to the Charleston. Both were brilliant though.

I've liked her attitude and she has been giggling a lot and taking criticism well.
Nice to see her dancing well at last. ![]() She is working hard, so hopefully she will pick up technique more as the weeks go on. |

Yes, even though not a fan, I would say that Kellie's Charleston was a bit more clean.
Kelly and Kevin danced side by side until the last 4 seconds and they lost it for me. Firstly because they did the whole thing side by side, instead of it being a wow moment of how perfectly in time they were, my attention was drawn to the tiniest flaws and secondly because part of the charm of the Carleston for me is the partnered part with the crazy legs. |

For me yes, too much into Swing and Lindy than Charleston. If you watch Josephine Baker she too has bent legs but she's not sitting on them. It's difficult to explain what I mean but it's like imagine there's a chair under Jamelia's bum which is slightly lower than her natural resting position and she's sat on it, then the chair is taken away and that's where she's "coming to rest" in her legs.
Whereas when you watch Josephine, it's all coming from her legs not her bum if that makes any sense? |

Expecting a load of bizarre comments from people with very fixed ideas about what a Charleston is. I shall ignore every one. This was her best dance

I 100% thought Jamelia's Charleston was the stand out dance of week 4. You could tell she'd really studied the moves and practised hard. She pulled it off and I had to watch it again to check it was as good as I thought. She seems less abrasive now and much more likeable.
